okay i'm looking for a place to get the cheapiest oil filter for me 2000 ram. would be better if it was in CT but where ever. the dealer wants $9. 85 and the cummins dist. place in rocky hill ct wants $8. 50 roughly. so i'm here to ask is there a place i can get them for cheapier. anyone have the part number for the cummins filter?? thanks

also how easy is it to clean out the blow by can? i decided to start doing my own oil chnages due to the cost at the dealer of $66 a change

8. 50 sounds pretty good for a oil filter. Is that a stratapore? I personally would only use Fleetguard or Amsoil filters(they cost more). You get what you pay for. I think the Cummins filter is made by Fleetguard same as the Mopar just there name on it and they charge you more. Just take the blowby bottle off and dump it out or just extend the hose down or down and farther back and throw the bottle away. :D Do a search on here and you will find lots of info on the blowby bottle.

Paul... There are a few things we owners can do to help extend the life of our CTD's. One of the most important things is changing the fluids and lubing the chasis on time and on a regular basis. The $8. 50 you are quoting for a filter is pretty close to the best price you can get for a Fleetguard Stratapore (if that's what your getting). Don't look for the cheapest filter you can find in a off-brand. You can get the current Fleetguard filter number out of you Geno's catalog, and that's a good place to buy a 4/2/1 maintenance kit. Good luck... :)

The filter Paul was quoted is probally the standard, not the stratapore.

Geno sells the standard for 7 bucks, so plus shipping, 8. 50 ain't bad for the

standard locally.

I wish Geno's would sell there maintance kits with out the air filter. Who has

a stock air filter anyway? A six pack of just oil filters at a discounted rate

would be a big hit, I think.

This guy isn't looking for quality, he's only interrested in the cheapest filters for his Ram. I did a quick search and found Auto Zone and Cheap Parts sold pretty cheap filters, lowest was 5. 99, look around you will save yourself some. Also E-bay has plenty of filters most run 12 for 70-80 bucks, give them a try.

Yes Amsoil and Fleetguard are two of the best with reguard to quality filters, and yes you do get what you paid for.

"This guy isn't looking for quality, he's only interrested in the cheapest filters for his Ram. "

HMmmmm - sorta like buying Safeway brand (el cheeepo!) motor oil fer yer Rolls Royce to "save" money, isn't it! ;)

Nothing but Fleetguard 3894 for MY pride and joy!

To each his own...

Perhaps try the Tech2000 filter line at walmart. They also have Fram. Make sure your filter rupture indicator is functioning properly. The cheaper brands have been known to fail due to high start up pressures.

In reality... going to Napa to get a NapaGold filter would work fine and not cost much. You're not going to save a lot in the long run either way.

Let me see here . . if I saved $4 per filter by buying the "el Cheapo" line at wallyworld and change every 5K Miles after 200K miles I would have saved $160 !!!! . . I could then use that saved $160 for 6 cartons of cigarettes to smoke while rebuilding my $8000 Cummins :{

Are you kidding me ... I'm a Stratapore guy ... my Cummins will last more than 200K miles and I will smoke less cigarettes ... see Fleetguard is better for your health also !!! :-laf

thats not what i meant by cheapiest. i want a fleetguard but i just figured there must be a website that has them for $6. 00 somewhere. someone said "would be nice if you buy like a 6 pack of them you get a bigger discount" thats what i was hoping for..... i just bought one from the dealer (1 mile down the road) and it was $9. 68 + tax and the cummins store (20 min drive) wanted $8. 50 so i figured the gas savings was enought to pay that extra buck at the dealer specially when gas is at $2. 35 a gallon.

i change my oil every 3k not sure if thats to soon or not but i guess it's just my old school thinking (old man drilled it in my head when i was a kid) since i don't use synthetic oil i figured that would be the safest best. CAN i wait longer?

the pirate thing... . type "O" but hell it's almost halloween right!!!!! errrrr you skuzzyy *******s i'll run you thru unless you find me some cheap fleetguards!!!!! :-laf

Any oil that meets or exceeds the API CH-4 or CI-4 specifications will go beyond 3,000 miles! If you are changing your oil at this mileage, you are most likely throwing GOOD oil away!

I was raised in an era where oil changes were recommended at 2,000 mile intervals, and I used to do that... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... but not anymore! Since about 1980 timeframe!

The only people that recommend 3,000 mile oil changes are oil Companies!

PaulG ... if you are using the standard filters and dino oils you should be able to go 5K per change ... I am using Delvac and the stratapore Fleetguard filters and do mine every 5K ... the oil is still somewhat transparent when draining and could possibly go to 7500 miles per change without a problem ... but then again it takes 20 mins to change the oil and delvac is cheap.

I'm at 11,000 miles on Delo 400 15/40 so far - wanted to go for 15K, but now in our new home and situation, the truck will likely see lots less use, so not certain as to accumulating that many miles in a reasonable timeframe. . last oil analysis at 5000 miles showed the oil was better than new in some categories - excellent in the rest. Bypass filtering seems a great way to safely extend oil use - so far, the way I use my truck - about 12,000 miles per year - annual oil changes seem entirely feasable...

Sorta makes the cost of oil and conventional filters a dead issue~

Next time state you are looking for the BEST price for the Fleet guard oil filters, it will help.

Oil changes and oil are two very, very personal subjects, whats perfectly fine for one is atrocious to the other. I personally do not feel like the guy that changes his oil every 3000 miles is throwing anything away, hes ridding the engine of dirty oil and replenishing it with clean oil, whats wrong with that? Nothing. If you feel comfortable changing your oil like that then go for it. I do not drive very much so I only change my oil twice a year, in the spring and fall. And in between the oil changes, I replace the filter every 1500 or so miles. I do this on all of our vehicles, diesel or gas, and I do use Amsoil on everything as well. I think keeping the oil clean is the most important single thing you can do, by changing the oil filters at short intervals I think it really helps. I am now in the process of adding a Dual BY-pass filtration system to my Dodge, that also incorporates a Pre-oiler for added protection during start-up. Seems the worst part of this type of set-up is where to mount the filter mount, the battery mount and alternator mount that are available by certain members, don't seem to be a very good choice. They just do not allow the user enough room to easily change filters, and access the engine. I found a spot on the right side behind the bumper to mount my filter mount, it is protected, in the air way for cooling, and is easy to access for filter changes. I just finished welding the mount today, so I will have some pictures of it later on this week. Maybe you might want to consider just such a filter for your truck as well?

Amsoilman... funny you mention the 2000 mile intervals. I was in talking with the owner/manager of the local Ford Dealership today (his dad and my grandpa were are good friends). His office is full of old time automotive ads and car photos. He has a large gas station type clock on his wall which reads... "Kendall... the 2000 mile oil!" along with the little Kendall "hand" showing two fingers or whatever. I kinda chuckled to myself thinking of synthetic intervals of today.

Those prices for Fleetguards are about as cheap as it gets. My work has a fleetguard account and delivery everyday. Even with the volume discount I can only go down to $5. 25 each for an ISB filter. I went kinda crazy and bought a case of them. I've been staring at them in the garage cabinet for quite some time. Hope they dont rust out before I use them :D
