I have an extremely local shop with a dyno that I would really like to start working with. The only problem is that the owner had a bad experience with a diesel smoking up his shop and still hasn't got it cleaned up yet, and as a result he has sworn off diesels forever. I think he was relying on the ventilation system he uses with gas engines to control the smoke, and it just couldn't keep up.

Anyway, I'd like to show him how to solve the problem, so that I can have a dyno 10 minutes from my house. Isn't the only thing you need to do to attach a hose of some sort to the tailpipe and run it out the door? Any suggestions? Do any of you guys run into problems with local ordinances and releasing the smoke outside?

just hose it outside the door... flex exhaust comes in 25' sections if you buy it in bulk [i'd go for 5", so you can run it straight of a 5" pipe, or reduce it down to less]

most semi truck repair shops will have it. might be a little harder to get in full coils, but it is available like that [i got 10' of 4"id a while back from my local truck shop (woodbine truck center)]

What about couregated (I know I can't spell) flex hose from Home Depot or somewhere... . the stuff you use for drainage ditches and the like? It should be pretty cheap, and the egt shouldn't be too high by the time it gets to the hose.

We also notify the fire dept first :-laf They get POd if they have to answer a call to find out it is just us doing a lil testing.

I had a 1hp dust collector so I mounted it up on a shelf in my garage, cut a hole in the wall and ran 4" PVC outside for the exhaust.

Then I ran 4"PVC along the ceiling and dropped it down using 4" drainage pipe, the type you buy rolled up in 50 or 100' lengths. I then adapted from 4" to 6" using stove pipe because my exhaust is 5" and I hold it on the exhaust with a bungi cord. My trucks a real smoker and this set-up works great. But this is not under power. It would not work on a dyno under power but it could be scaled up with a 2 or 3hp dust collector and larger duct.

who are ya talkin about goin to?

It was going to be Hot Weyer performance on Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita, but I've talked to him and he's really not interested. He's a gashead. He did give me the name of another local shop -- RPM --that I haven't talked to yet.

Why, do you know someone in my area?
