I've bought a lot of products that don't quite live up to the hype, but the Mag-Hytec is the exception. I can't say enough good things about that cover. Not only do you get 4 more quarts of fluid in the Dana 80 axle, but the ability to easily monitor the fluid with that magnetic dipstick makes it worth the money. I have to believe that with the attitudes toward upkeep that I've noticed around here, anyone having the Mag-Hytec cover will probably extend the life of their differential considerably. And on top of all of that, it looks good. You don't have to worry about RTV either, because of the O-ring supplied which is re-usable. Chrysler ships the trucks from the factory without synthetic which in these trucks IMHO is a big mistake. I'm not surprised that I've heard of all of the problems with rear seals that have been posted here. Nice job on detail for cleaning the surface, Vaughn. It's a bit time consuming and tedious, but well worth it when you get the cover back on.

well john with the exception of the carbon face seal , all the other seals were fresh , this stuff was just so liquid that nothing would keep it in the gearbox, but i do agree with the old seal theory , because my only other experience has been with old , hi mileage vehicles and they probably needed new seals anyway

the mag hytec is on my list of "BOMBifications" and i will probably give the syntechics a shot seeing the amount of positive responses on the subject , i feel there are many knowledgable people on many of the subjects posted , the knowledge i got from this site finalized my decision to purchase a CUMMINS powered RAM

I changed mine @ 19k mi with Amzoil, along with the Mag rear cover. Adds almost another gallon!

When you change yours, after draining all the fluid, use your floor jack & jack up one rear wheel at a time. This will drain the fluid in the axel tube. You will be surprised how much you get out of each side.

Mopar-Muscle,
I have too agree with John W in NH about the seals. I have been useing the Amsoil synthetic gear lubes(75W-90)in many applications including my Dopdge/Ram. I have never had a seal leak with this product, and I also have many large trucking accounts that use it as well with no problems. My current Dodge has 118,000 plus miles.

If you really want the ultimate, get the Mag-Hytec cover. It is a very high quality product!

Best regards,

Wayne

I just did my rear end and had a hard time finding this thread in the archives... ... .
I hope this post brings it up to the top for new comers... ... .
Wish I would have got the Mag Tech at Dieselfest at bargain rates!

By the way, how much lube can you get in one of these things?
I got 6 quarts in it! I let it set for a while as I added lube with my wifes turkey baster, then I backed up into the driveway and "basted" some more in... ...
Can you over fill it?

Yes, you can overfill it. It will begin weeping out of the pinion seal. Stay within the recommended fill level. It won't blow the seal but you will begin to notice it.

Vaughn; Just got back from Macon with my 15-40 amsoil and filter . While I talked to the owner of the shop, {diesel shop} and the large truck mechanic, both said they will use ATF in the transfer gears. To light, they said. We use 5W-30. That's a first for me Makes sense though. / ATF is mighty thin. Have you herd of this? Preston
