Hey guys,

My dad's '07 3500 has 700 miles on it. Check engine light came on this morning. I attempted to read the codes through the odometer the way I do on my '02, but no success. Can it still be done on the new rigs? Also, while driving we are hearing a strange whistling noise from the motor compartment area, possibly passenger side exhaust. NO, it is not normal turbo whine!!!

-Cole

P. S. - Whine can happen w/ exhaust brake on or off.

Mine makes a slight noise kinda like that when its cold, but i have no codes... . YES you can still check codes by cycling the ignition key 3 times ending in the ON postition

Thats weird? I Just tried a buddies 08 tonight who had a CEL on and couldnt get the codes to come up? I was wondering what people were doing to get the codes from the 6. 7's? Never had a problem before getting them till tonight.

I tried to pull codes on a friends '07 by using the key on-off method. I couldnt get it to work... . I tried again doing it "Faster" and, Violla ! It worked.

I had this problem, check engine kept coming on while towing, and had to make two trips to a dealer. They ended up getting Dodge on the phone who gave them a fix

Well I tried again this morning on my dad's rig. Couldnt get it to work. I tried turning it back to the position right behind Run, instead of all the way back to Key remove. Didnt work. I tried holding in the stupid button to release the key (too much like a Ford IMO) and turning it all the way back like my 02. Didnt work. Im not sure whats going on.

This is a guess at the mil light, but since I have experienced the same light several times in my 5K miles of driving my new '07. 5 it may well be the same reason(s). For mine I have figured out that the light has come on (several times) and gone back out on its own due to insuficiant time to do the particulate matter burn. According the the manual it requires about 45 minutes to complete the cycle and my light has come on during several shorter trips like my 12 minute commute to work but then gone off after the 40 minutes it takes to visit my sister. I know this is not a rock solid answer but since it has happened exactly the same at least 4 times in less than 5,000 miles I am farely certain that is the cause.
Having said all that, keep in mind what the new G30 recall states as far as addressing problems directly related to the DPF and regeneration cycles so that may well fix the problem. I have not had a chance to have my recall addressed, nor talk to my tech about my problem but for sure the truck has run perfect and strong reguardless of that stupid light - on or off!

Buddy took his 08 to a dealer, 02 sensor was the culprit for the CEL, updated sensor installed along with a reflash for the transmission for a clunking sound when coming to a stop (downshifting at wrong time) and says truck runs better than ever!

Still curious if anyone else has gotten an 08 to bring up DTC's with the 3 fast key strokes?

Success! I took Rdunkin's advice and cycled the key FASTER! It worked, I dont know how the hell it knows the difference, but it worked. Flashed P0128. Called the dealer it came from, whom we trust alot, and they said "Thermostat rationality" or something like that. Something isnt calibrated right, but no prob under warranty. Dad said occassionally it will go up to 200 temp, and then drop off and repeat. Doesnt sound too serious.

Thats funny you mention that cause i got that same exact code this morning and it goes to dealer friday... . Funny thing is every once in a while i'll cycle the key 3 times to see if any other codes have popped up and there are no more codes at all, but engine light still on

I had the G30 recall done tuesday and got the P0128 code this morning. I had 7000 code free miles, and now had the recall done and get a code... figures.

I had the P0128 code last Sunday, 2008 Laramie SRW Auto, 3700 miles. I called the dealer Monday, when I went to leave work to take it to the dealer, the light was off. Called the dealer, he said to drive it, about all they could do is clear the code in the computer as the problem apparently happened only once.

Same situation here... No problems til i had recall done..... I do every once in a while check for codes and the code is gone but the light is still on...

This morning dad said his Check Engine light was off too. As far as I know it hasnt come back on. Im thinking it was a difference in opinion between the thermostat, and the sending unit, hence the weird gauge and code. Dunno. All I know for sure is this: IF the check engine light comes on in my '02, somethin is WRONG.

Are you plugging it in? Rationality code is when the three sensors don't agree with each other at cold start. I think it is within 6 to 10 degrees. Using the block heater confuses it for sure.

I had driven my truck (cold) from home to get some coffee 3 miles away. I shut it off, went in & got the coffee. 2 miles into the trip back home the check engine light P0128 code came on. So unless the light coming on is delayed, it's not from an issue at cold start.

Mine was plugged in with a block heater and an oil pan heater. I started it up and let it idle with the exhaust brake on and at 1100rpm for about 10 minutes. I was about 1 mile down the road when the CEL came on with P00128.

It seems silly to me that using a block heater in the winter is going to "confuse" the ECM and set CEL's. JMO.
