cruising down the road with cruise control on, engine sputters once and the tach falls to 0. Check engine light comes on immediatly. 5 miles down the road sitting at a stop light and the tach comes back on. Runs/drives fine. 2nd time its happened. Same code= 1698 er whatever it is when the computer gets a funny signal. Cleared code 1st time, now its back. (2 weeks ago)

No bombs just a high idler from DSC. (4 mos. ago)

TPS?

High Idler connections?

Sounds more like a Cam Position Sensor. 1698's are usualy associated witha NoBuS code and then the truck runs lke garbage and ALL guages take a nap and the dinger keeps going. Mind did the exact same thing yours did and it was a Cam Sensor.

However there should be more advise comin.

P1698 No CCD Messages received from

PCM

Bus communication failure to PCM. A 9Companion DTC9

was set in both the ECM and PCM.

Truck never ran bad, just one quick sputter, like I shut the key of and back on quick on the lawnmower. Only guage that fell was the tach too. ???

Last time it did this was as soon as I hit the high idle button.

This time I was heading down the road stareing into space. ??

I just put a CPS on my Sister's 00. It was a beotch. It's behind the starter and tightly squeezed into a hole in the block. There was a core charge, but I WASTED the one I took out. Better luck for you. I got it at Cummins, but you'll need a number from here. I don't have it handy.

Her truck would sputter and tach would dive. Appropriate codes were set.

so what was the final outcome Makensmoke? mine did about the same thing, i was going down the road and noticed a little stumble then another one that acted like i hit the throttle and looked at gauges and seen the tach was at 0 and check engine light on only did that a few times then ran ok, i thought it could have been the moisture for setting for a week in this wet weather? any help would be great. i did the key thing and got P1693 code thats all

On my 2000 the problem was the crankshaft position sensor behind the starter, Not the camshaft sensor behind the injection pump. , about $40. 00 at Cummins. John

It was the crank sensor, behind the starter. Within 500 miles of the first studder the truck was in limp home mode more than not. So I went to Cummins and bought the sensor. It only took 4 days to get it in. I started a post if you search "stuck ckt" you can see me loosing my patience. MAJOR pain in the arse. Not to scare anyone from doing this, but it seems like some peoples come right out, and some don't. Needless to say, I had to eat my $6. 00 core charge. But its fixed now, everyone is happy again.
