Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Check Engine light...

Yesterday I pulled in the driveway, got out to open the gate, when I got back in, the CHECK ENGINE light was on. I was thinking... WHAT THE !@#$... I shut off the engine and then restart... light goes off... and did'nt come back on. This is the first time that I have ever had the light come on. I cannot retrieve codes on my '99 with the key trick.

What do you think... Are there simple things that can cause this or could it be a preamble to bigger and better things

Thats the way my crankshaft position sensor started to go south. The engine light (MIL) would come on after start up or driving then it might go off when shutting down the engine. Later after about a week of the engine light coming and going the tachometer would drop to zero and a power loss was noted. $60 later and about an hour to replace, it solved the problem.

What kind of code reader do I need to get the codes, OBDII, Cummins, Dodge???

An OBDII reder will work. JC Whitney has them for about $150.

Or take it to Autozone. They will retieve the codes for you free of charge.
