check engine light on. Auto Zone pulled a P1690 code. Dealership says code related to the injection pump? Cant say for sure because they need to look at it and can't get me in until monday. Truck drives ok now but is sluggish and saounds like it is missing during firing sequence.

May I suggest the "Search Forums" button at the top of the page, type in "P1690" You will come up with a few threads on this code. That will explain it but briefly there is a difference between where the injection pump thinks it is and where the crank or cam position sensor thinks it is. The most common cause of this that I have seen is a faulty cam position sensor. I had this recently myself and it actually turned out to be the electrical connection to the sensor, after fiddling with it my problem is gone.

One thing to remember about dash lamps...

As a general rule a red colored lamp needs attention right now while orange lamps mean proceed with caution, Kinda like traffic lights.

The check engine lamp normally is colored orange and while it does not have the ability to change to red- software will enable a flashing mode where the lamp flashes steady at you. This mode means continuing driving may cause more damage. On steady simply means to make a service appointment to see what fault code turned on the lamp.

Many think the fault code tells what is wrong with the vehicle but a check engine lamp is like a fire alarm in a hi-rise building. Once the lamp is on a technician can extract a code that will tell what floor the fire is on, from there detailed circuit and component testing is required to locate the actual source.

So if its on steady, drive it and keep your appointment.
