I have seen some of the factory fuel filler caps rusting out on the Dodge Rams. It seems that rain water is getting inside the filler caps through the tedder cable that holds onto the cap when you fill up with fuel. The rust is then transferred to the fuel tank.

I have been replacing these rusted fuel filler caps with a Stant replacement that is not drilled for the Tedder Cable.

Check your fuel caps for this condition and replace asap!

Hope this helps!

Hi All,

One more option. I replaced mine with a locking version that I got at the dealer. It's made from heavy duty plastic, except for the locking tumbler. No rust on this baby. Don't remember the price, but it wasn't too much.
