I changed oil on two B150's in the boat via the braille method. That is reaching around the side of the engine while behind it with filter held in one hand and slide it up behind a cooling line and find the filter attachment point and turn it while push up on it. This was while hold it from the bottom. Was not easy. Can not visualize doing something similar while hold the filter from the side or how with one hand you move it up to the point that your hand is under it. Maybe some do more hand exercises that others???

This port engine was the easier one. The one to the right(starboard) was much harder. As the filter side was up next to the fuel tank like the left side of this one is.

Sorry I didn't watch this, or any other video on how to change oil on a CTD. Its a simple task. As a retired technician I've seen it all, and the CTD is maybe a 5 on a scale of 1-10 as far as obstacles, and difficulty go. What's the big deal?

Are you from the top or a from the side type of guy?

So, I'm not going to lie here... I have a couple sincere questions. Note that I've not yet changed the oil in my new to me 2011 4x4 (which replaced my 03 2WD)
1. I've never seen anyone crank a filter on so tight. A good and snug hand tight is it. Am I missing something on the 6.7?
2. I've not yet looked at the access to get to the filter. I figured I'd put the truck on the lift at the shop and do it like nearly every other truck... out and back in from below.
What am I missing here? Again, sincere questions as I learn more and more about the 6.7 (one of my favorites, so far, is the high idle using cruise control and exhaust brake :) )

Your oil filter can be removed from the bottom, can't be done that way on the 2013, and newer they changed the frame . No access from below, it either removing the turbo intake or thru the fender well.

I think the instructions for tightening is 3/4 turn after making contact with the gasket. I just snug it up pretty much on feel, works well for me, no leaks or problems removing.

Thanks. I was gonna crawl under there today and take a look (hadn't been back on the forum, yet), but AZ decided it wants some of that cold, slippery stuff that falls from te sky. Still unsure what it's called, though. :)

The point being, these Youtuber's make these things look so easy and simple. In the real unedited world trying to lift a new filter filled with oil out of a hole just barely big enough to get one hand in, lift the filter, find the oil filter housing one cannot see and then thread the new filter onto the housing using just your fingers is something that seems to be conveniently glossed over.

Ok just did my first change, thru the fender , genos tool , same tools used as too tall.

Removed wheel (tire rotation)
3/8" craftsman ratchet w/cheater pipe and socket type filter wrench
fit well NO problem ,came off easily

at at this point things start to go not to good

Geno's tool after fiddling around testing that it was sealed ,well it WAS NOT (6oz oil lost)

new filter filled with oil (1-1/2" down from top)
Geno's cap installed & sealed with just enough force to keep sealed

Position filter thru fender remove cap , no problems

clean hands off ,first attempt to find & screw on filter FAILURE
Need to grip filter lower , one finger under bottom of filter 2nd fail
wash hands again , regrip filter (after cramps subside) 2fingers under filter & a prayer and finally success

I see why too tall added the plate to the filter socket. Now I need another oil cap wrench : (

Yes screwing on filter isn't easy from side
But I don't like the thought of being folded over from the top (bad back)
But I will try INSTALLING filter from top next time

still gotta find and grease that joint

Cheers All

You sound like a candidate for Cummins12v98 method going thru the top ,removing the intake :)

Its apparent going thru the fender well is not for everyone

Step stool next to the right front tire and reaching everything is a non issue. Exactly how I did both of my 98 12V's. Never spill a drop. Filter has a full quart added before installation.

I will give your system a go in July, except I will drop filter from fender. Too tall 's system for removal ( considering i have his tools ) figuratively works well for me. I also have all other tools for top removal ( except for those filter pliers )
It is Great that we all have ALL the options listed here from good sharing people not out to just make a buck.

Thank you all
now I need to go find that hidden front drive line weird o grease fitting

Cheers

Didn't see the part where you dangle over the front of the truck & screw the filter back up and non ; ) could have missed it tho I'm bout blind ,you can just ask my wife

cheers

Thats basically the same part that gets skipped going thru the fender on the videos . Reaching is not the issue its actually getting it straight ,and started on the threads. If you hit it the first time not too bad, but if you struggle with it, and hand fatigue sets in , and it will with us old guys :) then it becomes a bit of an issue.

This last time going thru the fender well I hit it right the first time, and was not an issue, but it can be if you keep trying to get the threads started. I found it no difference in difficulty, about the same going thru the fender well as thru the top. I object to taking the turbo intake off. Its been off twice now, and thats the last of that, no more.

That new part does address the filter tipping over, great idea! Curious why you cut the vid when raising the filter to screw it on? That part IMHO would be the hardest.

Unedited: I cut things out of the video because some people say they are too long. I have nothing to hide fellows. Here's the exact original. If you want to see anything else you think I'm being deceptive of, let me know, I have all the originals.

Yeah, noticed that myself. I've seen more that a few Youtuber's demonstrating how to change the oil and they almost always edit that part out. You see the filter go in the hole and next scene shows an arm coming out with the words, "done !".

It seems a lot of videos are click bait. Wonder how much this guy makes off Youtube ?

Now I know who gave me the thumbs down, ha. Minnow, I have nothing to hide. Just trying to save a little time as people get bored if the video is too long. I posted the unedited video for you under the comments but maybe you didn't check back. Here it is again. I'm sorry if you think I'm trying to be deceptive. I don't have anything to gain either way. But anyway, here's the exact portion as recorded of me lifting the full oil from my plate and screwing it on. BtW, I'm 69 years old, retired and just do these video as a hobby. I'm not trying to make a buck off of you, I promise. Just trying to share what I've learned.

I never thought for a second you were trying to be deceptive in any way, I do the filter change same as you. I have no trouble getting the Genos cap tight enough to remove the filter or too tight to remove the cap when replacing the filter. I do like your new tool to put the filter in when putting on or taking off the Genos cap, but as said so far that has not been a problem for me.
