Off Roading Check out this HUGE armored truck

We saw this Huge truck the other day during a dust storm. It has a fork looking thing that will extend out to move things out of its way like bombs.

Looks to be a modified 5-ton.

That is what is called the Buffalo, it is used to investigate possable explosives. the crew operated the controls from inside the armored compartment.

makes me drool seeing such a beast, can't wait to get the deuce back on the road, work in progress right now with hopefully a soon to be repower with a LDT engine and other goodies to come.

It sort of looks like a modified OshKosh prime mover in the front, i think someone said it was a Buffalo, i believe it, moving anything in its way... :-laf

some specs I found on it. .

curb weight of 45,320 pounds and a maximum payload weight of 38,680 pounds, the Buffalo measures 323 inches long, 97 inches wide and 117 inches high



it has a MACK AI-400 with an Allison HD-4560P 5 spd auto.

Thanks for the info on the Buffalo. I have seen these things around our camp here in Iraq and have never had the chance to meet the crew and talk to them about. I do know they are built to with stand a direct blow from an IED (Improvised explosive device). I have heard of one taking a hit and having the axle blown off and it flipped the thing over but the crew was fine other that a few scraches from the roll.



Also there are a few smaller versions of the Buffalo running around here.

I think the smaller version is called the Cugar or something like that.

I saw a TV show several years ago about redesigning the U. S. fleet and they had the entire system based on that wedge body on there.



The one they blew up for testing lost an axle too but the cabin was fine. (personell carrier) They were demonstating the idea that it could survive well enough to be set on a bell style axle and use what it had left to limp away to be repaired. Thats been pre 2000 though. I had forgoten about them.



Norfolk Southern has been hauling the replacements for the 5 tons over the last couple of years. They aren't so elaborate. I get to see some cool stuff rolling by on the tracks.
