Variable vained exhaust wheels or nozzles have been around quite some time. They are quite efficient as are they expensive. The wastegated turbo is more basic and less prone to failure as the parts are more durable than the finer vained exhaust wheels. Also let it be known that Garret makes several replacement parts for the Holset assemblies. I will look into the possibilities of a variable vained exhaust wheels for the HX35s and 40s. Before the Cummins-Holset marriage Garret/Airesearch/Allied-Signal (now add Honeywell to that) had the most durable turbos in the US. Holset had that claim in Europe. Now because of Holset's durability over time, it is also coming out in the way they build turbos over here thanks to Cummins. Holset is a much better turbo in MY opinion.
We now have another option for you HX40w wanabes. We have available the HX40w compressor side conversion for the HX35w. Which changes the HX35 compressor wheel and housing to the HX40 spec 8. 3 liter size. For a lot less than converting to the complete HX40w. Let me know if there is any interest in this as it is quite new. I will stock these if the demand is there.
