I have been looking at alot of medium duty trucks and you dont see an 8. 3c series cummins out thier. any ideas why? We have a couple of em in a firetruck and our ambulance 300 and 350 hp respectivly and those things kick ass. I would love to have a rollback witht he 350 version and an allison. That squad before we put traction tires on it would break the tires loose if you werent careful. Travis

We have two but they are kind of a cheaply built engine from what I gather. Prone to cracking front covers with the air compressor and power steering pump both hanging off there. 350 or even 330 is a bit much for this engine. I have an ambulance with an ISB-260 though. The powerband of this engine is very narrow making driving it a bit annoying. It would have been perfect with an ISC-260 instead, torque down to 1400 and below... .

You may also be overlooking them in Ford appliactions because they will have the Ford script plastered all over them but if you look at the tag on the left side gear cover you will see that it really is a Cummins

Birken is no fool and he is not a big fan of either. He drives an ambulance that has the 5. 9 and it is a dog. I dont blame him for having no lost love. The shame of the deal is its only 15k. They just geared it wrong or have a slouch of a transmission. 15k is a joke. The 4 cylinder cummins could move 15k with authority if geared right.

Now the thing about the front covers. I would like to see what he is talking about. Something about the compressor being heavy and in a bad spot.

Also some guy claimed he had a broken camshaft. Have you guys heard of that? Looking at a camshaft. I would assume it would be difficult to screw one up.

I think the 5. 9 is a great engine. I have lingering questions about the 8. 3. Not everyone is a big fan of the 8. 3.

I am. Have run several in C-IH Magnum tractors. They have guts. :D

Also, one guy I worked for while going to college, had one in a Hyrdamaxx 2400 tiling machine. 250hp. Sure can smoke nice when really lay on the hydro in high range. :D The hardest it has to work, is usually when you are in some heavy, wet clay gumbo. Has 24"x 7' wheel on it and rice tires.

I just wish the "B" series was a wet sleeve engine. Yes I have seen a couple of "C" series engines with the cam broken. (Right behind the gear) Both were in dresser bulldozers. TD15's. Pumps and governors were out of mfgr specs when tested after getting camshaft repairs.

All of our service trucks(FL-70's) are running them and are having no problems. Even the ISC's. Lots a road miles and lots of above idle speeds,(crane, air compressor, pto type of stuff).

Only replaced one front cover on a "C". This was due to the blowby tube being plugged up with mud, frozen in the bellypan of a Komatsu dozer. (Really ballooned that thing out,let me tell ya)

When I worked at my last job we had a fertilizer floater that had an 8. 3 in it. It ran great, but had some sort of casting flaw that caused a head gasket leak. We also have an 8. 3 out at the school and it was out of an R60-62 if I remember right, it always wants to run hot we're not real sure whats wrong with it.

Got an ISC in the firetruck I drive and I love the powertrain. It is just something about 35K lbs on a pickup wheel based truck. But it does turn real nice and sharp.

We run and ISC 330 in a KME custom cab rescue pumper with a 200" wheelbase and a GVWR of 44,000. It moves with plenty of speed and acceleration and has provided flawless service in its first 3 years of service. I do however not like the direct drive fan as it has no fan clutch whatsoever. We're getting a Horton. It makes the engine extremely loud sounding... and the basic engine is not all that loud. Just the fan drive constantly whirling away.
