Driving down a country road the other day- I had just turned off of a busy highway. I was going about 40 mph & heard a loud "pop" come from the back of my truck. I looked in the mirror to see my spare going UP into the air!

The end of the cable had frayed & the retainer swedged onto the end let go & let the spare drop to the pavement at about 40 mph. I found the plate the wheel rests on in the road & the spare wound up in a field next to the road. I'm just glad it didn't happen at 70 mph on a crowded freeway!

I'm going to try to fix it by looping the cable through an eyebolt & clamping it to itself, and mounting the plate to the eyebolt.

spare

This has been posted before it has happened to some members. I just ran a chain over the cross member and used a pad lock. No problem. :)

I have owned alot of trucks with the spare mounted this way and the only time I messed with them was when I had to move it to do something else, last time I left it off. I run E rated tires check them often and never had a problem. am I the only one who doesn't use a spare for a just in case flat  ( How many times have you needed it :-laf )

There's a Master cable lock available on Amazon.com for $16. 22. I've got it on order and will secure the spare with it. My spare tire winch failed years ago and the dealer replaced it. I still don't trust it and hope this works.
