I noticed a few days back that I was missing the last manifold bolt on the top closest to the firewall. So I made sure to put a torque wrench on the rest and went to the dealer and got the bolt under warranty. I just thought I'd pass this on to everyone that way you can all be sure to check yours as well.

Yeah, I saw this as a small item in either Issue 29 or 30 of the print TDR on page 58/59 and checked mine last weekend. All mine were tight as a drum head, with right at 10200 miles on the engine.

On my truck and a friend's 98. 5 a couple of the rear exhaust manifold bolts had been sheared off due to thermal expansion in the exhaust manifold (which was cracked as well). We think this is due to high exhaust temps for long periods of time where the manifold can heat up to close to the exhaust temp while the cylinder head stays nice and cool (190f). Neither turck is run over 1300f(pre turbo) but 1250 for a long time (10-15 minutes) can cause damage. Not to pistons or the turbo, but the manifold!

Luckily the dealer replaced both under warranty (at around 80k miles)

Hi guys, tell your dealer that you know about TSB #09-002-01. This is for engines built on or between Serial number 56419738 and 56777585, with a date of manufacture from January 01, 1998 to September 22, 2000. This information is available on the engine data plate located on the left side of the engine on the side of the timing gear housing. It involves adding exhaust manifold bolt retention straps to prevent torque loss of the bolts when pulling heavy trailers for an extended amount of time. This bulletin just hit my dealer today. Hope this helps you out some.

I also found my clamp loose at the turbo. it was on the stock exhaust sytem. I think it was the source or fumes in the cab this winter. strong exhaust smell at stop signs not the "oil smell"
