When you change your oil or have someone do it make sure you tighten it good. My oil filter loosened up and I had oil drippin' I'm not the only one who has had this problem, there have been a few others. Hand tight won't cut it with the vibration of the Cummins. I always tighten it a little extra when I do it but I had a free oil change at my dealer and they just put it on hand tight.

Gee Phil,
Funny you should mention this. I just changed my oil a few days ago and after opening the drain I noticed lots of oil underneath. I soon chased it down to the filter being loose.
As the old Swede used to say,"If I want sum dumb sumbitch go screw things up, I go myself".
Ya shore, you betcha. I change my own oil... .
I'll keep an eye on it from know on!

It's a scary thought of that thing coming off in the middle of BFE with a load on. I know the Cummins is tough but not without oil! #ad

Here's a tip - use a magic marker and mark a line on the filter and on the housing. Then whenever you pop the hood to check the oil (ie show off the engine!) just make sure the marks are lined up. I put mine on as it states on the filter, lube the o-ring with fresh oil, spin it on until it's touching the housing and then tighten it another 3/4 turn. Haven't had one loosen up in over 24,000 miles so far (5 filters).

I agree with Steve.

I think the problem with some of the folks, whos filters are coming loose is the definition of what hand tight really means.

I like Steve have done 5 oil/filter changes and have not had one come loose yet by using the same procedure.

Phil, glad you caught your problem early!

Check one of the last two issues of the TDR. There is an article about a redesign of Fleetguard filters for 24 valve engines. I remember reading about a pressure problem causing the threaded part of the filter to warp. I never had the problem with the old design Fleetguard filters nor with the new design. I did have this problem the one time I had to use a Pennzoil filter. Leaked all over the place.

I also agree with Steve. I've done over a dozen o/c's except one, the one the dlr did and it showed up as a puddle in Durango at a Albertsons parking lot while on the road with my gear. I also posted the other day about my buddies new fords, I forgot to mention the other thing about the ford was the sound of the psd especially with the windows down, it sounded like ther was combustion occuring inside paper thin exhaust manifolds at idle, my dodge is louder at idle but it is more like music, the dodge really sounds good again this only an opinion from behind the Zion curtin. All these trucks seem to have their quirks, I am sympathitic with that crackle bs seems like the equal to several of our brake pull issues, anyway i'm rambl'n.

after the first oil change on my y2k it became apparent that a moderate tightening with a filter wrench was necessary to assure a leak free ride. I was surprised to discover how loose the filter had gotten.

I agree with Steve and Runaway. If the filter seal ring is lightly lubed with engine oil and hand tightened 3/4 of a turn after LIGHT contact with the filter nest surface, the filter will not come loose! I've used the Fleetguard LF3552s (old case design/MicroGlass filtering media), LF3806s (again, old case design/but, StrataPore filtering media) as well as the LF3894s (new case design/StrataPore filtering media) with the same filter removal difficulty (i. e. THEY HAVEN'T MOVED). I have utilized filter/filter mounting base reference marks at numerous oil changes, detecting NO movement at periodic observances. I would like to point out, achieving the 3/4 turn specified by Fleetguard after contact with the mounting nest surface, is a two handed operation that requires a pretty fair amount of strength to obtain. It would be very easy for one to focus on the writing on the filter (as a reference point) and only tighten same approximately 1/2 the required spec. , as there is seemingly identical writing 180 degrees around the case, albeit, upside down. Just a theory of mine on the filter loosening situation.

A good 3/4 turn past contacting the gasget should prevent any leaks. I don't know about the rest of you doing your own oil changes, but 3/4 turn after contact required quite a bit of torque on my nylon filter strap wrench.

Some people with leaks might be afraid of warping the filter or stripping the threads to get the full 3/4 turn on.

Greg

I tried the nylon strap and a few others, all damaged the filter in some fashion.
I couldnt have that on my $6K engine.
I picked up the magic marker trick from this list... nice trick for provide some comfort.
I found using the latex gloves gives me the added "traction" to really twist the filter nice and tight with my hands.
I use a filter wrench with claws to get it off now. 4 oil changes later (5th comming up) and it's been fine. I'm using DC filters.

Hey Guys - The same misfortune happened to me shortly after taking the truck to a quick lube. Oil all over the place. All of us remember the old 1/4 turn past contact on the gassers, and some of the quick lube new employees don't know to tighten them down. So now, when I go in I ask them the magic question.

Sheeesh, I was lucky to notice it. What a nightmare if I hadn't. Papa Joe

Steve St. Laurent, thanks for the tip on marking the housing and the oil filter with a felt tip pen for easy reference,I change my own oil/filter an never had a problem with a leak but your suggestion will make sure it doesn't happen.

bobk's suggestion about using latex gloves is a good one - I forgot about that part. I always wear latex gloves when changing the oil/handing fluids. It definately makes it easier to tighten up the filter. Also, it does often take two hands to get it that full 3/4 turn after contact. I also think that you are very likely (I always did when I tried it when I was younger) to damage the filter using a wrench.

-Steve

I know that this is an old topic, but...
I changed my oil the other day (change #2) and lo and behold, the filter was loose and could be moved by hand. Wasn't leaking, but it was close. New oil filter is now on TIGHT, and position marked with a sharpie. By the way, the plastic baggie trick (put the baggie around the filter for removing and re-installing primed filter) works great!

you guys with the magic markers!!! hahaha--reminds me of the bad old days in the artillery--when the breechblock on a 155mm is closed, there's this crude-looking little line of white paint that's supposed to be unbroken when it's properly closed. . the cannoneer in charge of that says "WITNESS MARKS ARE ALIGNED!!" and the other guys glance over to see if he's lying or not before he gets the blank M-16 round that goes in the primer port... to quote Steve Martin... "RAAA-aammm... ... BLINNNNNNNNNNNNN"
for those of you that were of legal drinking age twice in the same lifetime---rich
