I was hoping someone on here could tell me the procedure to check the abs codes on my 96 3500. A week ago the abs and brake lights came on and have not shut off. I have read on here that the abs sensor in the rear-end housing seems to be a common culprit. I removed it and cleaned it with some electrical cleaner to see if that would fix the problem. It didn't. I don't mind replacing sensor but would prefer to troubleshoot rather than throw parts at it. I did check all abs related fuses and all were good. Thanks!

Couldn't help myself

I just had to post the link to your Stang's pipe job! :D

Hehe! Thanks.

I believe the truck is just rear wheel anti-lock. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner. I thought there was a way to get the codes by grounding a specific wire in the abs system. It would cause the abs light to flash x amount of times and that would be the trouble code.

Anybody?

The instructions you seek are in the OEM service manual. I had to check mine last month, but don't recall exactly what I did. I'd give you more specifics, but the book is at home and I'm stuck at work.

Would it be possible for you to post the directions from the manual? I would appreciate it! :) Thanks

Momentarily ground the diagnostic connector and count the number of times the indicator flashes. It doesn't say where the connector is. I would assume under the dash. The long flash begins the code followed by short flashes. Count the long with the short flashes to get the code.

1 not used

2 Open isolation valve wiring or bad control module

3 open dump valve wiring or bad control module

4 closed RWAL valve switch

5 over 16 dump pulses generated in 2wd vehicles (disabled in 4wd vehicles)

6 erratic speed sensor reading while rolling

7 control module fuse pellet open, isolation output missing,or valve wiring shorted to ground

8 dump output missing or valve wiring shorted to ground

9 speed sensor wiring/resistance (usually high)

10 sensor wiring/resistance (usually low)

11 brake switch always on. RWAL light comes on when speed exceeds 40mph

12 not used

13 electronic control module phase lock loop failure

14 electronic control module program check failure

15 electronic control module RAM failure

I won't help you much today but my 95 gas Ram has the same problem. Theres a scanner hookup just for the ABS brakes somewhere under the dash on the passenger side of the truck. I've already spent about an hour looking for it with no luck. I'm pulling out my shop manual and tearing into the dash thursday. If you haven't found it by then I'll let you know where it is. good luck.

I saw this after my previous posting. Check out the ABS/engine light posting by cerberusiam in the 1st generation forums. His explanation is for a 93 but it sure sounds like it what I was looking for in my previous posting.

Thanks! If it isn't raining tomorrow, I'll dig around under the dash and see if I can find the connector and check for codes.

I fixed the problem today. It ended up being the brake light fuse. Since both the abs light and the brake light were on I figured it was something to do with the abs fuses or whatever. Oh well. At least it was an easy fix!

A guy at work had the same thing happen awhile back... messed around, messed around, couldn't get it figured out, until his buddy got in the truck and hit the brakes. . guess what? The third brakelite bulb was out! Replaced it, then no problems!

The abs is not working, I slide this sucker sideways at 60 mph and it smoke the 4 rear tires like a nascar.

Now back to the abs, I can not check the pins to see if it has fire or grounds because I dont have a pinout showing me which ones should have ground and fire?

The Check engine light NEVER goes thru a check, When I turn on the switch the light comes on at the same time and DOES NOT BLINK and does not check itself. It is just a steady burn!!! SO I guess it is doing no self test!

If I unplug the abs computer light goes out...

HELP!!!!!

Well, lets see

I was so mad at this truck and this ABS problem that I went to trade it and about ***** when I seen the prices of the new cummins, I am already a hater of all the new electronics so I quickly said no way!!!

I posted about this ABS problem and I got some really good ideas but no one hit it right. I found the problem today and now the truck is fixed!!! I said it is FIXED!!!!

I spent 11 hours going thru the brake system from front to rear and I have checked all vaccum lines, wires,sensors,valves... ect... . well it ended up being the "Vaccum sensor" beside the fuse box under the hood on the drivers side. I did not have a qlue to what it was or did. I just knew my ABS light stayed on. I have replaced that and Now see is like new again!!!!

I love my truck and will keep it forever!!!!!

thanks Guys!
