I get so many products now with that onerous label that says "This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm" that I finally took the time to look up the list.

Here it is.

I read it over, and here are some notable entries:

Aspirin

Carbon Monoxide (wouldn't it asphyxiate you long before killing you of cancer?)

Citrus Red No. 2 (food coloring? not sure... )

Cobalt (stay away from Cobalt twist drills!)

Cocaine (well, duh!)

D&C Orange No. 17 (cosmetics coloring)

D&C Red No. 8 (cosmetics coloring)

D&C Red No. 9 (cosmetics coloring)

D&C Red No. 19 (cosmetics coloring)

Diesel engine exhaust

Ethyl alcohol in alcoholic beverages

Estrogen (whew! I'm clean on this one)

Iodine-131 (isn't this used to sterilize an injection site?)

Lead (I've handled a fair amount of lead... me okay!)

Mustard Gas (well, duh!)

Naphthalene (you can buy gallons of this at Lowes)

Nickel (that's right, the element Nickel)

Retinol (THIS IS VITAMIN A!)

Shale oil (better not mine coal for shale oil!)

Sulfuric acid

Testosterone (I'm doomed... I'm loaded with this stuff)

Unleaded gasoline (don't get gas!)

I'm all for labeling dangerous chemicals. But this list doesn't mention how much exposure is harmful. If I put gas in my car once, will I get cancer? If I drink 1 beer, will my reproductive system be harmed? How much sulfuric acid do I need to drink to get cancer? How many aspirin is too many? How much Vitamin A (Retinol) is too much?

Seems to me this list and these little warning labels might do more harm than good. I mean, I see them on so many things that I've come to ignore them almost completely. It's like "the state who cried wolf".

If the State of California had their way, each of us would be hermetically sealed in glass jars, then all of the 'carcinogenic' air would be removed. Then we wouldn't have to worry about getting cancer. Or anything else.

If the State of California could chop off the Bay Area and a portion of Socal, we'd be be the most normal state in the Nation.

Hey, at least we were one of the first to alienate smokers. Smoke all you want. Just don't make me have to deal with it. Heck, even Nevada just passed the bars/restaurant smoking law. Looks as if we're rubbing off quite nicely... next--- we're coming for your assault weapons!!!! :D

And California doesn't even have smog testing for diesels... . yet. As for the Prop 65 warning labels... just think of it as another way your State saves tax money. All those EPA requirements? Thank us. We'll gladly spend all the tax money on stupid studies and crap instead of the simple things, like fixing our horrendous roads.

i always envisioned a rat floating in a bucket of whatever they are testing, toss squeeker in a bucket of used motor oil and if he dies or gets all warty it must be bad for you :-laf oops nibbles is titsup in the bucket of lighter fluid time for a new warning label Oo.

According to the State of California, the leading cause of death is life. Everyone who ever died, lived. Avoid living at all costs!

Gotta agree with you on the alianating smokers thing. Georgia recently did that and I LOVE it! Thay have the right to smoke, as long as their right to do so does not interfere with MY right NOT to have to breathe it! That is one of the few laws I LOVE!

As for the "known to the state of California" stuff, I always say "we are in Georgia, so that does not apply to us!" :D

one of my favorites, when i wanna screw with a customer at the shop i tell them their dihydrogen monoxide pump is bad and walk away :-laf
