I,m ready to change my gear lube in the front and rear gear boxes. I wanted to go to a synthetic 75w/90w. In this town there is a Chevron jobber(bulk dealer) so I stopped by to check out gear grease. Chevron has afull synthetic 75w/90w that already has the friction modifier added for limited slip rearends. My question is anybody using this in their limited slip? Will I have to add additional friction modifier to this and how much? Also will it work in thr Dana 60 front box with the frition modifier in it? Rear end is of coarse a Dana 70 LS. I,m trying to save money by buying in bulk and need synthetic. Also I,m tired of going to Cummins - Dodge etc etc when I can get everything I need at Chevron and at quite a savings in bulk and always available. I think I need synthetic grease for the cold here. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks

Why don't you think about using Amsoil 75w-90? You don't have to add a friction modifier for limited slip use. Let me know how much you might need and I can give you a price. You can order direct from Amsoil and by pass the dealer, jobber and other middle man.

I guess I'm not following. Why don't you have to use a friction modifier if you use the Amsoil product? Does it already have it added?

VWTdi, I have a question for you. I recently went to Cummins NW in Portland, OR. I asked the tech a bunch of questions, one of which was what oil do they recommend. They recommended the Valvoline 15W40 (since it was made for Cummins) and told me not to use full synthetics. Since you were a Cummins Tech and now deal in Amsoil, what is the reason they do not want us to use full synthetic oil?

There is NEVER a reason not to use synthetics except two cases.
1. Your engine or specific unit you are running is not broken in.
2. You like friction and wear. (just trying to be funny)

I cannot tell you why the valvoline rep said what he said, well I can but won't get into a ******* match. Amsoil's 15-40 is far superior to ANY non synthetic except for the 2 reasons above. Almost ALL synthetics of any brand are far better than non synthetics.

A Valvoline, Quakersludge, Mobil, Cummins etc. are always going to tell you that their oil is best. They have to eat and make the mortgage by selling their product. . understandably. But we have to wade through all the marketing hype, and look at data to see which oil is the best.

BTW the oil Cummins distributes is not any where as good as a good synthetic. This is a high profit item for Cummins and therefore they push it.

Oil does a few specific jobs and to say that it is specifically designed for a particular engine, other than the viscosity rating, it just marketing hype. There are some parameters, ie diesel oil, that have specific charastics designed into the oil to perform differently for the specific application.

I only use Amsoil because I have seen first hand what engines look like that use dino oil with few rare examples. If I find a better oil then I would gladly switch, but so far Amsoil is the best and most cost effective lube on the market.

PS rebuilt many a Cummins running "dino oil" that could have been avoided by using something better.
