I'm the treasure for my vol. fire department. I was paying bills last night and looked at the bill for an oil changed performed on our 2002 Chevy Express passanger van with the 6. 5L turbo diesel.

The invoice indicated that they used 5W30 (I'm assuming dino automobile oil as the price was $0. 98/qtr). I called the service writer this morning and he said that 5W30 is fine for that engine.

Is that true? It seems a bit light and I suspect that it is a "S" type oil not a "C" type API oil.

This van sits in a heated bay, and is used to take FF's to classes and meetings (not much stand still idling like most apparatus) usually highway type miles.

when i had my 6. 5td, i ran 10w30, 15w40, 5w50, 0w30, 15w50 and maybe some other weights too... 15w50 mobil1 is what i ran mostly in the last few years of it, but i ran 15w40 for a bit while in break in time, but winter came, so 10w30 went in, then i switched to 5w50 castrol and ran that until the following winter, then i tried some 0w30 semi synthetic for a little bit, but i could hear rod knock when it was hot under hard acclelaration so i dumped that and stuck in the mobil1 15w50, and never went back to anything else [i had some left overs of the other oils and i stuck them all in the deep freezer and did a pour test on all of them from 0°F and the mobil1 15w50 flowed the best at that temp]

According to the "Gosha" Chart, this engine calls for a CG-4 rated oil.

it doesn't sound like a 5w30 would be good for soot control either. my friend who is a cummins marine mechanic runs mobil 1 5w30 in his 02 cummins truck. maybe i don't understand oil the way i should but i wouldn't go below a 40 weight. i would think that if your going to run your truck you might want a oil in it with some kind of compression rating
