some of my diesel conversions

1989 Cummins 6BT

I have a customer that is thinking about putting a 5. 9 in his Chevy. Other than the obvious, buy a Dodge, can anyone give him an idea as to what he needs to do?

I did not ask the year, as at the time I did not think about contacting the TDR. I should see him Monday morning & will get more info. I do know he wants to use the engine & transmission assembly from a Dodge.

It makes a large difference which truck he wants to install it in and which engine-transmission he wants to use.

Generally speaking, it cannot be done in a 1/2 ton truck. A GM 2500 or 3500 chassis and front end could support the engine and transmisssion weight but would require major modification and items like a Dodge radiator or something as large.

If the Cummins engine and transmission combo is an older 12 valve it would be much simpler and cheaper to install than a 24 valve or HPCR which are computer controlled and the engine and transmission are integrated by ECM and PCM.

The more possible way to do it would be to have the complete Dodge truck for parts sitting beside the GM in the shop to make the conversion.

Did you explain the cost of owning a Dodge? Much higher than an older Chevy. The Cummins-to-Chevy conversion has been done many, many times, but no company I'm aware of sells a complete "kit" to make it easier.
