So I see Chevy is releasing a version of the Cruze with a four banger turbo diesel. Does anyone know who's engine this is? All I see is "designed in Italy, made in Germany and installed in the US".

I've been looking at the VW TDI's for some time, but it would be nice to have another option in a small car diesel.

Very little information was provided in the R&T article but I think it is probably a VM Motori which is, I think, the same company and perhaps even the same engine installed in some Chrysler-Fiat cars such as the small Jeep.

The engine will probably be better than the car in the case of a govt. motors car.

Europe and Asia are 30 years ahead of American pension and healthcare companies GM and Furd in diesel engine technology with the exception of our beloved Cummins engine.

Baloney.

In Seaman Barlow's exhalted opinion, anything that is made by Ford or GM is crap. Tell that to my brother who just rolled over 200K on his 2004 F-150, or my other brother with 170K trouble free miles on his 2007 Chevy Avalanche. Tell my dad who just retired his 1994 GMC Sierra 1500 with 379K miles where only routine maintenance was required (except for a water pump and an A/C compressor). Oh and tell my close friend with his 2007 Chevy Suburban with 217K on the clock which he drives 600 miles every week. I've had a couple of full size Chevy trucks in the past and they were trouble free. There's lots of old Chevy Luminas, Pontiac Sunfires, and Ford Tauruses around here with over 200K on the clock and still serving as dependable transportation.

I like my VW, but this marvelous example of German engineering has had about $12K of warranty work done in three years and 67K miles. In one case the entire fuel system had to be replaced because of a defective high pressure fuel pump blew out and left my wife stranded. That alone was a $10K repair bill that VW covered in full.

If bull excrement were dollar bills, Seaman Barlow would be a millionaire!

To say any one American manufacture is inferior to another is being biased to say the least. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. The big 3 all have lower end throw away models because our country in general demands cheap vehicles. I am actually partial to Fords Ive owned several older model pick ups, Mustangs, a few construction vans, an Explorer, a Lincoln, and recently a Mountaineer Premier. With the exception of the Mustangs they all had high mileage and no extensive repairs other than the expected maintenance. I had a 300 C. I. straight six in an 88 Ford half ton. I rolled the odometer for the 4th time and within a week got T boned in an intersection and totalled the truck. I was really bummed over that one for a long time, that truck ran so beauutiffully... :{ If they ever would have gotten their act together with their diesel program, I may have wound up in a "Furd":-laf. Grew up around a few Cummins on the farm though, and always wanted one of my own, SO it was a pretty good fit when they started stuffin em in the ol dodges. Overall Ive been fairly happy with the truck. The automatic was the weakest link, I took care of that with a good rebuild. Im on my 2nd DC, I dropped the built trans out of my last truck before I sold it and stuffed it in my current. If it ever goes, Ill probably swap it for a manual as I still do not like the gearing of the 47. I just dumped a small fortune in replacing ball joints, shocks, brakes, and front axle joints. And I havent even rolled 100k on this one yet  Yep, they all have their weaknesses.

IMO the Ford 300 straight six is one of the best engines ever put into a motor vehicle. Same goes for the old Mopar 225 Slant Six and the Jeep 4. 0 liter six. Take care of these motors and they will last forever.

If they put the Cummins in the Ford then I would be driving the Ford. Until the 4th Gen Rams came out, Ford Superduty had a much better cab and better looking body.

I agree. Ford shot themselves in the foot when they got rid of that. They could have updated it with a modern 4-valve head and saved all the issues they had with their modular 6, 8, and 10 cylinder engines. I personally know of a few Ford owners who got the "$3000 tune-up"- they went in for new plugs and came out with two new heads. One even came out with a new engine.
