I could care less who makes the basic design of the car, I just don't want to end up driving the modern equivalent to the Chevy Chevette diesel! How many of you guys remember those little turds? :-laf

What about GM experiment with the 350 gasoline motor that they try to use as a diesel engine in the late 80's!!! That too was a disaster.

I owned one of those 5.7L pieces of crap equipped with self-streching head bolts and 5,000 mile head gaskets, also owned a 6.2L that did better but the transmission only lasted about a year at a time.

Imagine my joy when Dodge and Cummins got it together and built something worth having.

Judging the car because it more Opel than GM is like judging a G56 manual Trans because it's Mercedes built. That was my thinking when I chose a German designed Trans over a Japanese auto Trans.

Ummm, Opel IS GM- of German descent. Check it. There's more Opel here recently than you'd think.

Would you agree that Mercedes is one of the top cars sold here? Would you also agree that the G56 was designed by Mercedes for South American MD Mercedes truck market? Would you also agree that the G56 is a weak transmission?

If you agree to the first two, then your conclusion should be that the G56 should be a great trans for a LD truck. SO WHY IS THERE SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THEM? Just because it's Opel doesn't mean squat, if GM controls them.

I haven't checked on that yet. I've only read about the TDI pump failures on the net and haven't met anyone that has actually had the issue. I know at least a half dozen folks that have VW TDI's of late year models and non have had injection issues..............DSG issues but no fuel system problems.

Our Problem started at 32,000 miles fuel pump ate it's self took out whole fuel system on our Jetta . after 28 day's in shop I get car back it has 2 palm dent's in deck lid dealer fixed it via paintless dent removal Awesome thing to watch but as of July 2014 it's back in the shop for the 9th time now they claim it's a engine wiring harness problem .I believe it's the Idiot's that claim to be mechanic's at Ontario VW . As soon as we get it back we are trading it in for a 14 Jetta sportwagen have the Car picked out just have to wait for the Idiot's to fix it long enough to Dump it . we love the Car wife is a Hospice Nurse and put's roughly 4to 500 miles a week on Car andn average is 45 mpg so that is why we are sticking with VW . And to Boot I fit in the silly thing so It's all good .we are at 40,000 right now but I'de rather have a good running car then the pile we have now .but I don't believe it's VW I think it's the Shop.

RV, I DON'T think MB is one of the top cars sold here (only in price). I do agree that MB designed the G56. From what i've read on the TDR, the G56 has issues- don't own one. Opel has a great reputation in europe, along with many other cars that were once in the US, such as Peugeot and Citroen and (of all things) Fiat.

My opinion of MB is that's its a great car, I drove two different 300D's while in Germany in the late 70's early 80's. I was happy that MB bought Chrysler and my 04.5 2500 has been a great truck, that my brother ended up buying from me. My G56 however has not been up to the reputation of MB quality that I expected when I had to chose between transmissions for my 07 C&C. Opel is not a car I would buy in Europe or here, and that was before GM started producing crap.

Simplysmn, I contemplated buying a VW, but the TDI cost too much for our budget we set aside for my wife's new car, and the 2010 RAV4 we bought as well as the other Toyota's we bought have been great with no warranty work ever being needed. So we bought a 2014 RAV4, and that so far, has had no issues. I was not impressed with Ontario VW, and we couldn't run fast enough from their sales staff. My father bought a 69 fastback, and after the old Ontario VW, that was on mountain ave., got their mechanics hands on it, it was never the same, and it turned into a POC.

That 300D you drove back then is a completely different animal than what they make today. It was probably the best quality car from any manufacturer at any time. The MB/Chrysler deal was supposed to be a "merger of equals", but ended up as a plunder of Chrysler, with the remaining hulk sold off to Bob "Home Depot" Nardelli. I will agree though, that the early 3rd generation trucks did benefit from the teutonic influence.

My 85 Golf 1.6 diesel was rated at 51 horsepower. Compare that to the ever so slightly modified v twin 800 in my quad that's been dynoed at the HMF shop in Cleveland at 83 HP, you can imagine which one is funner to grab a handful of throttle.
