Ordered the Horse for the cart

fuel preasure gauge hookup

After years of ogling every dodge cummins I drove by, I finally bought one. This is the first vehicle i've owned that doesn't have chevy 350 in it. I don't regret it.

The truck I bought is a 97 12v 5sp 4x4. It has 154k on it but it seems very tight. Runs great. And the dealer put a shiny new nv4500 in it.

The first thing I need to fix is the doors. In a crosswind yesterday I couldn't even hear the cummins, no joke.

My important question is about the kdp. Is there a way to tell if it has been fixed, without taking everything apart. The previous owner obviously took good care of it and wouldnt be surprised if it had been done already.

After that and a complete fluid change, Im ready to start making mo power.

if the previous owner didn't brag about doing the KDP, I wouldn't bet on it... I think the tab method is the best way to go... I would tab the KDP before I did ANYTHING... it's so simple to prevent and such a pain to FIX, there's no excuse not to knock it out ASAP.

154k is nothing... it might as well be 15,400 :D have fun w/ it, the 5. 9 Cummins is about 10 times the motor a 350 could ever be...

McCRam: This is my first Dodge also, like you I have always drove the Chevys an have had good luck with them. Even though the CTD is what sold me I have been very satisfied with the whole truck itself. This is the second truck I have ever bought new, and it is way better (IMO) than the new 95 Z71 I had. I 've had it a year now, but only have around 14,000 miles on it. Time will tell, but I believe I got a good one. The (KDP) issue is one I would take serious (insurance for myself that is) I have told several 95-99 owners at work about the (KDP) problem and get the blank stare. All I can say to them after I tell them about it is it's worth checking into if was me with the year models this effects. I tell them you have been warned and don't go crying if something happens that CTD is junk. :{ Just my . 02 worth:D

Yeah my 97 1/2 GM was a good truck but it just wouldn't't pull 24ft trailers well. Ha. My Cummins is getting better mileage with a trailer than my old truck would get empty.

I'm talking to people I know to find some help me with a kdp fix. I'll do a tab or a jig. Neither of them sounds to hard to do. Ive never worked on diesels before though, so I have a little bit of anxiety.

Does anyone know of a jig around Billings or Great Falls MT. There's beer involved to anyone who would like to lend their expertise, helping a newbie get his feet wet.

I totally understand the anxiety!!!! I still get a fair amount of it when working on these things... I just don't have as much hands-on experience with them yet.

I would highly recomend doing the tab for the KDP... the bolts that hold the case to the block around the cam can back out and cause all kinds of mayhem too. while you're in there, you can remove them one at a time, clean them up, and reinstall them w/ some locktite in place.
