2000 Ram Injector pump problem

Cummins transmission options

Shane, I just saw your pictures and it looks pretty nice to me. What radiator and intercooler did you go with? I've always wanted to do this conversion into a Suburban also. I'm a little jealous now, may need to talk to the wifey... . :-{}

We used a '93 dodge diesel radiator and intercooler. It worked pretty well. My only problem is that I haven't put a shroud on the fan yet so when I'm idling and it is hot, my ac will not stay cold and when I'm pulling, my engine temp will climb higher than I like. Certainly not dangerous or anything like that but I think when I get the shroud on the fan, it will help all of that.

I was looking at the pictures of Patrick's radiator area. Looks like a GM radiator. But the fan clutch does not look Dodge.

I have limited space between fan mount and radiator. It would take a snubby fan clutch to work. I have a snubby short aftermarket fan with 22" nylon blades, but it is 4 bolt on. OEM dodge uses a screw on clutch.

I'm currently using a 18" solid fan from flex-o-lite. Works great here in the flat-lands, but pulling hard in the Rockies, it is inadequate.

Checked, the HORTON electric clutch is the best ticket, but no one makes a fan to fit the clutch now.

What fan clutch was used in the picture?

Pmaloney, First awesome job!! Great looking rig! I have a couple questions about the 24valve part. I am in the middle of putting a 99 motor into an older chevy. Did you use the dodge PCM? Did you retain cruise control, if so is it the dodge cruise or the chevy's? What was invoved with adapting the VDO gauges? Did you use the dodge/ cummins sensors? What about the Tach? Sorry for all the questions! I have the engine and all the hard parts in place now it is the electrcal that I have to tackle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lowell

Autoworld is a member now.

They are user autoworld

And their website is auto world montana

They were great to work with on my conversion.

Thanks for the compliments, yes there is a bolt on motor mount kit, I would have to dig around for the phone number of AutoWorld, there is also another member that used to work for them if I remember correctly, I believe his user name is DKarvanis or something to that affect. Mabee he'll chime in... .

Well I lost track of this thread and apparently have some unanswered questions.

Dog Diesel - The fan clutch is a factory Dodge clutch for the Cummins, the mount on the other hand I am not sure about. I sold the axles from the Dodge to a guy and he had a few different fan hub mounts and this was one of them it places the fan in the center versus off to the drivers side of the engine as the stock one does and it does not protrude as much as the stock unit. I would have to see if there is a part number on it that is easily visible.

Lnesham - I did retain the Dodge PCM at the moment all it is doing is operating the grid heaters. I have not hooked up the cruise control yet, I would like to but it is going to be a bit of a challenge as far as a speed signal goes. GM uses a transmission mounted V. S. S. , Dodge uses a rearend mounted V. S. S. and I am using neither. When I converted the engine I removed my ABS system since I never liked it, and then used the left front wheel speed sensor from the ABS system to provide a signal to my VDO speedometer.

As far as the rest of the gauges go, I used VDO senders for oil pressure and coolant temperature. If I remember correctly for the tach I tapped off of the Crankshaft sensor signal for that.

All has worked well so far, dont be afraid of the electronics, they are a piece of cake.

*very nice work Patrick* I am just getting started with my repower project. (1989 Chevy Crew Cab 3500) Autoworld (Ken and Dawna) have been awesome to work with so far, and my Chevy is still running the 454!!! Ken is an exceptionally knowledgeable guy on CTD repower projects - if you are doing one, give him a call. He will not steer you wrong!!!

Patrick - did you fortify your sound deadening in the truck. . ?? I am trying to gather all the materials necessary to make this go off the right way & wanted to know if you are happy with the sound levels in the truck, or if you'd do something differently with insulation or otherwise. .

Thx -

I would just like to tell everyone what I did to make it my conversion work. I didn't want to hack the fire wall so I moved the engine forward... looked great till I put in the rad/intercooler and the fan (it was 1/8" away!!) what I did was take the fan off the hub and I had a 3/4" spacer made that moves the blades back over the hub. Turned out great. I can post a pic of the spacer if you all want to see it.

Hey Patrick, Thanks For the reply... . I am still a little lost on this electrcal stuff. I have all the wiring out of the dodge (ALOT), and I am not sure where to start with this? I also have the dodge instrument panel which I was considering using, but I am leaning towards putting in after market gauges similar to yours. On the PCM you said all that yours is doing is controlling the heater grids... . will it work without alll the wires running into it? I am using the dodge axels so I will be getting my speedometer signal from the dodge sensor. Would it be possible to use the PCM to run the heater grids and cruise but do away with all the other unnessary wires. The wiring I have is alot of large bundles of wires and I know I don;t need or want all tha on my truck. Anyhelp is greatly appreciated. .

Hey Patrick,

I am in San Angelo TX. . Not to close ..... Last night I took the wiring schematic that someone posted a link to on here (it is for a 2000 24valve) I was able to use a meter a beep out and label most of the wires that are in the big plug that comes form the Engine computer over to the main fuse box that is mounted under the hood. couple of questons. what are the 2 wires that say Datalink connector 1 is positive and 1 is negative? Also I have about 5 extra wires that come out of that plug that are not shown on the wiring schematic... Any ways I know it is kinda hard to figure anything out over the computer... I was wondering where you started using your own wires? Did you have the factory engine harness. It seems like to me the easiest thing to do would be to start at the plug where the engine harness plugs into the fuse box and then maybe use the harness that comes out of the PCm and do away with the dodge factory fuse box and that huge mess of wires that comes out of it. Also what year was your engine? Mine is a 99. . Anyway maybe You could PM me and we could talk about some of this on the phone or something... ... . I really appreciate your help. Lowell

When I did my conversion I did not use the Dodge PCM the engine runs just fine without it. I was told that if the Cummins ECM is from a manual trans it does not need to see a VSS. I think I used about 5 or 6 wires from the 11 and 14 pin connectors to get the engine to run.

Thanx 24Vchev, that helped alot...

Patrick i was wondering how you like those VDO gauges??? Are you happy with them as far as accuracy and sooth movements? Also is that an hour meter in the tach? Are you using Dipricol on the pillar couldn't tell for sure in the picture? Anyways I think I pretty much have the wiring on the engine figured out. . I just need to get a schematic for the PCM so I can decide if I want to try to use it to control the heater grids, alternator and cruise control. I may just wire the grids up to a momentary switch and use an external regulator for the alternator. That depends how complicated the PCM wiring turns out to be. . Well thank you every one for the help on the engines wiring, turned out to be pretty simple. Don't know how I would get anything figured out without the TDR! Lowell
