Throttle HPCR swap

4BT in MA

I just got my 93 Chevy with cummins 5. 9 running this week. I have to work out a few bugs.

1st I have a 4. 10 rear end. Where can I get a ring & pinion for it that is 3. 42. The axle is a 14 bolt 10. 5".

2nd My factory tach is off. At idle it shows just over 1000 RPM. I used a fluid dampner(pulley larger than stock). How can I figure out the size pulley I need for my alternator to give me the right RPM?

Thanks

Kevin

Couple questions.

I'm in the process of pulling my 6. 5. I was told to use the original Chevy alternator for the tach. Did you use the Chevy alternator? I believe Autoworld has a pulley assembly. I spoke with Ken and he told me they use a 5 groove belt. Also have you had it up to speed? What are you taching at say 70 MPH. I also have 4 10 gears and with my 6. 5 I'm running 2800 RPM at 75, and I am concerned that is the upper limits of the Cummins although I will be running a 47RE and am unsure where it will come out. I may add a Gear Vendor overdrive; I would love to tach at 1800 to 2000 at 75. Tell us about your conversion, did you use a Dodge transmission? What motor do you have, etc. . ?

I used the Chevy alternator. I have bought allot from Ken. His prices are too high. I used the NV5600. I have not had it up to speed yet. I would rather not use a overdrive unit because that means shortening the driveshafts again.

I'm pretty good at wasting money - just ask my wife. . But, I happen to think Ken's prices are in line with what he provides. . Every dime I've spent with AutoWorld has paid dividends...

Anyway - yeah, get rid of those 4. 10's unless you are pulling some serious weight. . I think the best you can do with a Dana 70 are 3. 50's. . ?? MUCH cheaper to do that than go with an double OD set up. . I doubt you'd see enough MPG increase to justify a $3500 GV unit anyway. .

4:10 Gears

I have the 4:10s, 5. 9L and 5sp (93 Chevy 4x4 SRW). I pull and so will keep'em.

I get solid 17 at 75MPH, but my tach and manual tach meter have me governed at @2500. Wide open @ 81-85.

My solid 17 is factored with 1000-1200 mile fill ups, both tanks filled to the filler neck. I have gotten similar MPG since conversion (90K). At less than 60, I have logged 18, but I just just cannot drive that slow.

I still get 14-16 towing less than 7K with low height loads like autos and tractors.

With the price of fuel, the OD (double) is sounding more interesting.
