Cleaning old fuel containers?

I just read an AP article dated 7-12-11 (From unnamed GM sources) saying this car and engine would be available in the U. S. sometime in 2013.

No engine specs. other than four cyl. TDI.

I would be interested in more info. on this particular engine (If it is available?) maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

The article also says GM has a four cyl. TDI powered compact that is selling very well in Australia??

TIA, Ray

I suppose you could wait a be a beta-tester, or you could buy a US built VW Passat right now. It is highly rated and could probably scratch that 50 MPG figure, as this moded uses DEF.

My wife and I went to buy a new Passat TDI two weeks ago. We drove it for about 4 hours and were generally impressed, although there was significant turbo lag. Once it spooled up it ran great. However, the Passat was made in Mexico, not the USA. Later we looked at a Hyundai Sonata-T (turbo'd 2. 0 liter gas). The Sonata was built in Alabama. We both preferred the Sonata far better than the VW TDI. Ended up buying the "American" Sonata. It gets 33 hwy, and with the difference in fuel price, it's about the same cost per mile as the TDI.

The Chevy Cruze at 50 MPG would be very attractive! Moreover, it may start a landslide of diesel cars here in the US. While in Korea last year, I noticed that nearly half of all vehicles I saw were diesel. They get it. America doesn't (yet).

You are correct. The Tenessee-built 2012 model is not available yet. However, the 43 MPG Passat is still going to be cheaper to run than the 33 MPG Hyundai, as the price differential between diesel and gas is much smaller than that. Diesel cars typically exceed their EPA rating, while gas cars fall short. VW diesels also typically command excellent resale value at trade-in time.

I have driven a VW Jetta with TDI engine and liked it. I would buy one but my wife, like many wives, wanted an SUV.

I would not buy a Chevrolet with an imported diesel engine.

We had an '01 Passat, and it had all sorts of problems. No VW or Audi for me anymore, regardless of MPG.

I believe its the same as the jeep liberty. vm/moturi. As GM bought a share of them along with Fiat. I just bought a Jetta tdi 6 speed and get 54mpg without trying. Very happy with it.

I had an '89 Jetta, and with only 52HP, it would barely beat your MPG figure. If the current Jetta was put on a diet to remove all the useless nonsense that has been added in the last 20 years (1000# worth), imagine the mileage you would get then.

Neighbor of mine went from a 06' tdi bug, to a 08' tdi jetta. Mileage on the jetta was claimed to be 45/46 mpg, which i called b. s on. After better then a year he never saw more then 41/42 hwy. He traded for a sonata last year, and as mentioned the vw resale went a long way to the tradein price. . The sonata is a much nicer car, and mpg on the hwy is around 37/38. He's happier with the sonata, and dosent have the higher fuel, maint price of the vw. . Personally i hope gm makes a go of the diesel cruze. .
