As any of you who are parents or grandparents of young children know, child safety seats and the laws associated with their use have greatly changed over the years. The law used to be that a child up to the age of one should be placed in a rear facing child safety seat. Now, in Pennsylvania and many other states, the law has now changed to state that all children up to the age of 2 must be rear facing. And beyond that, most child safety experts recommend keeping the child rear facing as long as possible even up to the age of 3 or 4 or until they exceed the height and weight limits of the rear facing seat. I was sceptical of this concept when I first started reading about it. But if you Google rear vs. forward facing car seats and watch some of the crash test videos, it is clear why keeping these kids rear facing for extended time is so important.
On the market now are hundreds of convertible car seats that allow you to keep your child or grandchild rear facing for well beyond 2 years. The problem with many of them is that they are physically large and difficult to fit in the back of many vehicles. Still having 2 3rd gens in our stable, room in the back of the quad cab is at a premium and finding a seat that works has been difficult.
Several weeks ago, I ran across an article about a company out of Canada called Clek that makes a premium line of car seats that are physically a little smaller, but can accommodate rear facing children up to 43" tall and 50#. So I ordered the top of the line seat called the Foonf and figured I would give it a shot. It has all of the latest in child seat technology including the anti rebound bar, steel frame construction, aluminum crumble zone, and added side impact protection.
It came yesterday and I installed it this morning. Here it is in the back of my 07.
Now I'm not normally one to get excited about something like this and I am certainly not receiving any compensation for recommending their product, but I'm amazed with this seat. Not only does it fit well in the back of my 3rd gen, it is about the best quality product I have purchased on a long time. It makes the seats you see in the stores look like a joke. I'm so happy with it that I just ordered 2 more, one for my 1/2 ton and one for my van.
They are not cheap by any means, but I think this is a case where you actually get what you pay for. If any of you are looking for a seat like this for your child or grandchild, I highly recommend you give this company a look.
