chime meaning

on occasion a single chime will ring, with no problems indicated in the dash. anyone have any explanation?

What year is your truck? A TSB was issued that stopped the extra chime action you describe in earlier trucks (like my 03).

I had the same issue. What I discovered was that it would chime whenever it set a code that didn't illuminate the CEL. I don't remember the code number but it was for fan not matching anticipated speed or something like that. Good luck. John

who makes a good code scanner for htis truck. what about soft ware and using a laptop?

I get that right now, but if I catch it, my air bag lamp comes on for split second and goes away. Now my gauges are sticking all the time ... urghh! I am getting frustrated, time to take it to the *******, I mean dealer :{

Turn the key on and off (dont turn the engine over) 3 times really fast and the odometer will display your codes.

checked for codes , none, will the ignition key trick bring up all codes? reading info on scanners it seems that there is more info available.

It should do a self test and if it says done with no #'s in the ODO. then there are no codes. If it threw any there will be a series of number(s).
