What is your brand of Chimney Sweep equipment for wood stove type chimney (round) Really don't want to get on roof unless I have to have kind of lost some balance with different leg.

Thanks

BIG

I am using a 6" round brush that is connected to about 20' of galv pipe. I get on roof every year in October and run pipe up and down several times. Seems to work for me.

I use a round brush, put about 10 lbs of weights on it and lower with a rope. The wife holds the inside parts, it drops to the first 45° and I haul it up. Repeat a couple of times, go get a beer. Done. Have someone with two real legs do the roof part for you, unless you bounce better than I do.

Thanks for the encouragement BLU I appreciate it, I do bounce pretty well I have found out but would rather NOT if I don't have to. I have one that I have to disconnect the chimney from the inside of the house and have a big bag with a plastic hole in the bottom of the bag put a rod thru the hole and connect a pretty stiff brush to the end and run that up and down the soot and ash fall in the bag. Works pretty well but was wondering what others use. The wood we burn doesn't help much pine leaves a lot of soot, last thing I want is a chimney fire I do it a couple times a year when we burn a lot.

Big I don't remember the name but I saw on a show somewhere I a kit that you use a drill with from the bottom, don't know anything about it other than I saw it on TV

Bignasty, I burn pine wood also and I use Red Devil Chimney sweep. You use a couple of table spoon full sprinkled on the fire. I do it about every other day and plus I use a 6" brush before each burning season and run it up and down the chimney. This works for me, you can buy the Red Devil and similar products at any store that handles wood stove supplies. Hope this helps

I will have to give that stuff a try, Ive bought a few of those Presto Logs that is supposed to clean it out, Those did nothing but make different color flame as far as I could tell.

Dear Penny,

I and all of the TDR community sincerely wish BIG a speedy recovery from the broken (insert bone name here) that he suffered. Those pic's you posted of the mules carrying him to town on the buckboard and him flashing the V for Victory were just what we needed to know BIG is OK and will be back on the side saddle real soon. Hopefully the Dr's estimate of (insert number of months here) recovery is overly estimated. And who ever gave BIG the Tinker Bell for whenever he needs his (fill in something here) wiped will do at least 1/2 of the Tinker Bell duties.

Really Penny perhaps its time to get him one of those neck pendants that sends a distress call, really he should just kick back and enjoy and let some really provable young whippersnapper clean a darn chimney.

BIG, Get well soon.

Mr. GCroyle (aka Gary)

Gail has been having some uncertain times of late. Nothing physically, more of finding himself or forgiving himself for things in his past, that I don't care or want to know of. He's carried a heavy burden for a very long time its about time its lifted off of his shoulders, no one could do this but him. Gail has always! done things his way right or wrong, surprisingly most that figured he was off his rocker by doing it his way, Have been proven wrong. My Father and Son along with Gail have been doing some pretty heavy construction before the snow even melted, and when everyone said THAT ISN'T GOING TO WORK!!! Gail would just give one of his stupid smiles and said bet you a beer it will!!! and it would! better than Gail even thought I believe.

I have never worried about Gail, when he worked for days at a time whether it was behind the wheel of his truck or in the saddle on his Mule Daisy. But when Gail asked for help of two Pastors, and in Gail's way from Greg Harman, well frankly it scared the HELL!! out of me. Gail is fine, actually better than fine because he is finally at peace with what ever it was that bothered him so. Now for the Pendant that sends a distress call, Gail was given one by a Navy Chaplain when he was wounded in Vietnam, From what I hear from his Military buddies he wouldn't let it go until he felt safe. Its a Gold Cross, and again he wont let it go.

God Bless all of You!!

Penny

PS: As I type this Gail is out getting things ready for the chimney work in the morning, Trying to tell him not to do something is like a challenge to him. The Nephews that are working on the homes to be built called him an OLD FART! and he doesn't like to hear that I think.

Penny,

Never having shook BIG's hand, but I sorta figured him as a there ain't nothing I can't do if I set my sights to it sorta guy. And frankly I'd be more concerned if he did back off and get extra batteries for the remote control for the TV.

I don't see BIG needing much more than his Faith, his friends, his tenacity, Cowboy spirit along with his Lucky Penny and his Mules.

Now, just watch out for the Older Fart and make sure he don't bust up sweeping a darn chimney, if'n he did, I'd feel that I put the evil eye whammy on BIG. Ain't so.

Take care Penny.

I use the 6 inch brush with fiberglass rods from the ground. I have a cleanout outside, at just the right height.

Gail can! do most everything he sets his mind on, but will readily admit when he's over his head in something.

Gail's friends are longtime friends, he makes acquaintances all the time. But before he puts the label of Friend on a person he is very sure of them, its just his way. He is a Cowboy! in the truest form my Mother says it all the time, he was born a 200 years too late. Its not just something that he likes, its HIM! and the way he lives.

We are working on his Faith, I should say HE is, because only he can accept Jesus into his heart. He had always placed his Faith in his own Abilities, Family, Friends in that order. It worked for him when he was working 15 hours a day at work and more when he was off, Since his retirement he has had more time to think. I feel he has a great deal of turmoil going on with his thoughts about his Faith. I do know that he greatly admires Greg and Casey or HH? for their calm demeanor, and wishes that he could be like that. Rather than jumping into a running chainsaw face first attitude of his, Believe it or not he is a gentle man, but quick to take a close look at that chainsaw.

Gary this is why the family has told Gail to GO, that we will take care of the chimney and all the other work to be done. So armed with that he left this morning and will be back Friday have dinner with us and sing, he wouldn't miss that for anything. Then take them back out into the mountains for their vacations. Im sure that he will have a good time doing that.

Sorry for a Old Fart's Wife, running off about her OLD FART!!! but he's a good one!!

Penny

Penny,

Most likely a good dose of mountain time and the love of family will continue to heal old wounds. As far as sizing up a potential new friend a book that I told BIG about called The Long Rifle in the days of the fur trade the trappers used a phrase of "We'll see which way his stick floats. " I think this is a reference to the stick that anchored or tethered the beaver traps that they used. It told them something about what was going on in the trap that they couldn't see under water. Those fur trappers were BIG's kinda guy.

Take care.

Gary
