No politics, just Loons on a lake

Good weekend in Prince William Sound

So I got this knock off 98cc. Have no idea what brand since it's been painted all over the place. One gear forward no reverse. Ran great then now when attempting to start it rolls, also it doesn't roll backwards at all. I can take pictures of anything if anyone here has experience with these. I'm getting frustrated as I am a diesel tech master level but this little thing is throwing me around lol thanks to anyone who may try and help me if not have a happy fourth y'all!

Is it a CVT (belt drive) transmission? If so, it sounds like you need to take the cover off and inspect the clutch.

There is two side covers. The left side has a chain to the starter. Then it appears to be a clutch with a magneto that goes inside. So I think that may be a starter clutch. The right side where other Chinese clutches are at is a entire case that drains the oil but I can't even get it off without removing the engine lol. Kids toys I swear

Unlike bigger machines that have a wet centrifugal clutch between the primary and the crankshaft, some of the youth ATVs have a centrifugal clutch in the secondary(larger)CVT clutch, like a motor scooter would have. If a spring breaks, or the hub, the shoe(s) could drag or get wedged. Most of those Chi-Com machines are hard to get parts for.

And if they are available they mostly aren't worth putting money into.
When my oldest turned 4 I found an 86 Honda TRX70 to break him in on. At almost the same time a friend bought a brand new TaoTao for his kid. He rediculed me for paying close to the same money for at the time a 20+ year old machine as he paid for a brand new rig. On the third ride they were at my property riding when the head gasket let loose. It was repaired under warranty but was never really right after that, and he ended up selling it not too long after.

Meanwhile, 12 years later my now 34 year old 70 is still purring away  I let a buddy borrow it for when his grand daughter visits. When she outgrows it I'll get it back - eventually my own grand kids will cut their teeth on it as well :)
