I have noticed in the last month that if its above 90F that when I drive my truck after it's been sitting all afternoon, I here a chatter squeak coming from the right side possibly around the door area every time I hit a bump. It's definately coming from inside the cab but I can't find it. It usually stops after the interior cools down.

Any ideas?

You know just yesterday i was comming home and I kept hearing the squeek on the passenger side, thought it was the window so I tried to put it down a 1\2 inch, re shut the door but I cant find it either.

I have a few noises to chase down myself. One is the a noise thats present until the cab temp warms up or cools off. Another one is coming from the passenger side anytime O go over some rough roud, but I have a feeling thats something to do with my amp under the seat, jsut haven't ahd time to look. I just turn up the radio and they all "go away" :)

quad cabs

The squeak is a problem with the quad cabs. You have to FIRMLY SHUT the back doors, not just let them close. The doors have a couple of latching positions, and they are either tight or too loose. If the rear door is not tight, both doors will be loose and squeak or rattle when driving. Try closing them with more force and see if that helps.

Just got through chasing down a couple of squeaks / rattles myself. There were some other 2001's in for the same noises while I was there, and they had their dashes all torn out while they hunted fruitlessly for the source. The are weak spotwelds inside the fenders directly below the hood hinges. The only way to see if they are broken is to shine a light and use an inspection mirror to see them. Any sign of visible rust means the welds are broken. This is a semi common problem and the tech at the dealer found it for me. The fenders have to be removed for repair.

It wouldnt matter what the year is this is a weak point.

I agree with nathanbush, I have noticed that if I don't really CLOSE the back doors there will be a squeak with the least bump or dip.

UPDATE: Mine was built in Saltillo, Mexico. The story is the problem was determined to be a robotic welder that was set too low in amperage. It has been corrected at the factory. Good luck!

Wowsy

Like the analogy of the chipmunk;)

Have his brother (sister?) in my 99. He likes the drivers side, never seems to want to ride shotgun ;)

Had it to the dealer, they did a door adjustment, helped a bit.

I tow a 5er and have noticed that when I lower the air pressure down to around 45psi in the rears after towing the squeak doesn't show up as frequently. Might be the change in the rake angle or just softer tires.

Have wondered if adjusting the lower rear door catch might help ?

other squeaks

FAllen and all others,

You can get a squeak from the rear overloads rubbing on the perches. If you notice it more when towing, this can be a possible cause. Try using a little WD-40 or some moly lube on the top of the spring or the bottom of the perch (the perch should have the rubber around it) and see if the noise changes. Towing will also affect how the body sits, and the doors will rub differently on the rattle stops. Try a little lube on there as well.

When I was a GM service manager, the new Silverados were having squeaks. It turned out some of them came from the factory missing the rubber spacers and rub blocks for the leaf springs. You had to order the whole spring pack to get them...
