hello everyone i have a ? on the shut down thing is it the belt (i have a gaterback belt ) or the turbo. I allways try to wait till the egt is under 400 degrees but some thing still chirps, any idea's thanks --- merv

Generally speaking, if it's a single chirp it's the belt. A diesel engine stops suddenly when shut off and the accessories have momentum, which causes a slight slippage of the belt.

My '00 would chirp. I put on a gaterback and no change. Replaced the belt tensioner and it hasn't done it since(3+ yrs).

The dealer can install an "over running" alternator pulley which helps both with the chirp, as well as the potential of the belt jumping off a track due to the sudden stop. It is a dealer only item AFAIK, adressed by a TSB.

I had a chirp when I shut my truck down. Around 80-90k My alternator went bad. Once I replaced it, it did not chirp anymore

My understanding is that the updated, over running pulley is installed on all new dealer supplied alternators, though not necessarily on aftermarket alternators, but that the pulley can allso be bought from the dealer and iunstalled on the alternator by itself.

I have bought several alt from Dodge for our service trucks and they all had the over running clutch style pulley. As said it is supposed to stop the chirp. I had to change my pulley ( you need a special tool ) because I have a Kilby on board air and my compressor is belt driven off a special alt pulley. Mine does the chirp. David

Would the chirp be more caused by the fan after being shut down? That's the largest moving part. Mine chirps every once in a while continuously. I use belt dressing and its quiet.

How old is your belt? My friend had this problem too. He never changed it since new, it had 220k on it. All that was needed was a new belt. The old belt looked ok just made the squeaking sound all the time.

ABennin: my belt is 2 years old. 100,000 kms on it. This belt and the previous belt had oil contamination from the cracked gear housing. So I now use belt dressing once a month or so to keep them clean.

the belt is only 5 months old gatorback is a good one i think. Does the fan stop on a dime or does it coast a bit. One thing i noticed is if i let it idle till it gets to 350 egt it dosen't do it very often

That would make sense.

Mine has chirped since new. Never caused a problem, and in fact, alerted me to a water pump leak when it quit chirping. I just had to take a look and see why my chirp had disappeared :).
