Chrome exhaust tip Q?

Is a chrome exhaust tip like I see in any auto parts store, or any of our diesel performance parts catalogues just for looks/show, or do they actually change the sound a little bit on a straight piped, catless motor? Will one that extends out a few inches help to tone down the drone at idle?

The tips do nothing as far as sound goes, mainly there for looks and to extend the exhaust system slightly farther than stock to help with the soot on the fenders and bumper.

It helped my drone a little on the 12 valve when I moved it outwards, instead of having it inboard of the fender... . Other then that no change in exhaust note... .

They haven't changed the sound on either of my trucks. I have them to keep the soot off the truck and our fiver.

The only time they would change the tone is when going from one size to another ie... 5inch pipe to 6 inch tip. Acts as a megaphone. Has happened on the last 3 of my trucks.

I beg to differ on this one...



I had a Summit Racing exhaust and it had a 4" into 5" SS rolled tip... it COMPLETELY changed the sound of the truck (sort of resonated or echo'd)...



I HATED it (sounded like a "ricer"), so I bought a 4" chrome turn down from Geno's and viola, it changed the sound to what I would expect from a real diesel pickup!!!



And other than having a rolled tip edge, there was nothing special about the Summit tip...

Believe it or not, the rolled tip will actually reduce the inside diameter and in some cases cause a restriction. I have experienced this in a gasser before, 2" pipe rolled tip, actual inside diameter at the roll 1 1/2".

Umm, reread my previous post... a 4" into 5" tip with a rolled edge... was closer to 4. 5" outlet...

I have the oem (Mopar) Tip I think it's 5" and slips over the stock raw pipe, no cutting is necessary. I think it perfectly compliments the truck, it also eliminated the soot that used to colect on the edge of the fender and bumper. Since the stock tailpipe is still the same length and the Mopar tip just slips over it there is no change in the stock sound IMO? Also I notice since the housing of the tip stands off the stock pipe somewhat near the end, the soot doesn't collect around the lip of the pipe like it did on my stock raw pipe, make sense?



I paid $95- for the tip over the counter, kinda expensive for a tip but it's been on my truck 2 years, through snow and rain, mud etc I just wipe it down when I wash the truck and there is no sign of rust or deposits other than tire-rubber :-laf burnt & stuck to it.

Just pointing out the fact the rolled tip will reduce final diameter. In your case it does not affect you, you are still increasing you diameter. A straight 4" would be another issue.
