Chrome removed from steel wheels

I got bored today and decided to see what they looked like. It was actually very easy to do with a small screwdriver to pry up enough to grab the chrome with a pair of channel locks. The glue is something else.

Not a chance, I spent to much time on ebay playing bidding wars to get those.

So the chrome is basically a hubcap?

A glued on hub cap, I would imagine if you got anything between the wheel and the cover it would give you a hell of a vibration. Could this be the cure to the all those anoying vibrations, na to simple.

I got bored and wanted to see what they looked like underneath. They're already painted with some krylon semi flat black paint, rattle can.

Thank you for doing that... I now want a set of the chrome steel wheels to turn them into black painted wheels for off road use... and I sold my chrome wheels after I bought a set of aluminum wheels!

They don't look half bad. I have aluminum wheels for the summer tires and winter tires on the chrome ones. I might have to remove the plastic so I can have black wheels How did you remove the glue?

Razor blade to take off the thick stuff, and a brass wire wheel on a drill. Out of alll the different things I tried this seemed to work the best, and doesn't burn thru the paint just in case you might want to keep the factory finish.

Did you also try a heat gun on the glue with no luck. My truck came with the chrome clad steel wheels and as soon as I find a nice set of factory alloys the steels will be for sale.

I did try a heat gun, only to find out that its good to have caloused hands and its not worth the trouble.



I spent three months on ebay to get my polished alloys, I lucked out and found a set someone had mislisted. Good Luck

looks good. i have been meaning to do this for a while now... but living in the barracks has its issues. looks a lot better. now i just have to do it and get rid of the rest of the chrome.

Yes that is a great job. I did mine a year and a half ago and had them powder coated gloss black. they came out real nice and get props all the time. jalderman I am going to do the dynatrack hub upgrande when I get home (in Iraq now) did you replace your upper and lower ball joints during install on hub kit? if you did what kind did you use Moog,TRW,or Quad 4x4.

On Moog web page they only show uppers. Quad list all 4. At the same time as the hubs I am going to install kore control arms-Kore trac bar.
