Using NON DOT Lights.......

new diesel cars

Saw a report yesterday about the big 3 sales for October...

Ford is up 3%

GM is up 4%

Chrysler is down 30%

There was no speculation on why, but I believe it to be that their factories were shut down for a fair amount of time.

The dealer here was without anything new for about 2 months.

Thoughts?

Because anything labeled Chrysler sucks. The only thing left savings is Jeep Wrangeler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Viper, and Dodge Ram. Its the cars that suck really bad. My local Chrsyler/Dodge dealer has gone to selling Hyndui (spelling??). This is why Fiat is bringing their own vehicles.

When me or the wife need another vehicle we will not be buying a chrysler/dodge or gm.

It will be Fords.

Not that I can afford it, but I'd really like to drive one of the high end Taurus'. They look like a pretty nice ride, but for $45K, it'll be a tough sell with Infinity and Lexus.

When my wife and I buy another car, it will be another Toyota. Not a GM or Furd or Chrysler. However when it come to purchasing another truck, it will still be a Dodge/Cummins.

I wouldn't consider any Chrysler car product other than the Chrysler Hemi or Dodge Charger sedans. They are good cars.

Unfortunately a lot of folks will probably not buy from Chrysler/Dodge because of the federal bailout and illegal confiscation by the administration to hand it to the labor unions.

My wife drives a Honda.

And the previous month or maybe two it was Ford and GM down, and Chrysler was up the amount the other 2 were down. Cant remember if it was trucks or the entire line.

At this point, Ill only buy Chrysler. Theres NOTHING that another manufacturer makes that I want. Sure, the new Camaro is kinda cool, and the Shelby Mustang is pretty nice, but Id prefer a Challenger (or Viper if I could afford it) over them. Cars... Ill take a Charger or 300 over anything else. SRT8 preferrably. Trucks. Hands down Dodge has it. SUV? Ill take a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 or diesel over anything out there.

Chrysler just makes vehicles I want, and want to be seen driving. Style does account for something

I truly believe the best and most reliable car and small trucks are, #1 Toyota, #2 Honda, #3 Nissan, #4 Subaru in that order. GM Furd and Chrysler fall somewhere below that. The domestics have however gotten better in the last few years. All domestics of the 70's 80's, 90's and 2000's were miserable.

I don't know about that. The first car I owned was a 1993 Chevy Caprice Classic. I drove that thing all over the country, and finally sold it with 210,000 miles on it. The only major repairs were a new radiator and had the seals reworked in the transmission. Other than that, it was a wonderful car. I still wish I had it.

Well, since we're talking about cars. Just for the heck of it, I test drove an 09 Cadillac CTS (V8) with all the stuff the other day. (I wont go into the long story about why I had the interest)

We were going around the circular on ramp to the freeway. The sales lady said to "put your foot into it". So I went faster. Then she said "no, put your FOOT into it". So, I went faster. Then she said "NO, get ON it" So, I really yomped on it, expecting to end up in the ditch. Well, not only did we go "really fast", we stayed right in the lane where we were supposed to be. I expected centrifical force to throw me toward the door. But, it pushed me right back into the seat. I used to fly single engine airplanes. It was working the way a tight turn in an airplane using proper rudder and aileron keeps you in your seat.

With my big eyes and the huge grin on my face, I knew the poor sales lady was seeing dollar signs. But, unfortunately for her, Im not in the market for a new car.

BTW,the 75 Chev Monte Carlo that I bought new was a great car. And I would consider killing somebody if I could have the 1973 Plymouth Roadrunner back that I bought brand new.

Gee, I fall on the opposite side. The worst vehicle I owned was a D50 Dodge 4x4. Worst engineered motor I ever saw. Unplated steel bolts in an aluminum head - guaranteed galvanic corrosion and busted bolts. Assembly reminded me of the Japanese tin toys of the 1950's - guaranteed to give you one heck of a cut if you ever touched the edges of the sheet metal. I think they used old Gillette double edged razors when they made them.
Almost all of my USA made vehicles "performed" flawlessly and were solid built. They were mostly Mopar (don't lean on the fender please) or Ford in nature with a couple of GM products thrown in for variety - 71 Olds 442 W-30 (don't take that 455 block over 5500RPM without gussets down around the mains#@$%!). I couldn't keep a Chevy motor in one piece for more than a month. Apparently GM powertrains couldn't handle the lead in my right foot very well, but were a very solid, quality built car. The others (non-GM) were VERY solid and daily runners... 65 Mustang 289 HiPo was quick (not the 271hp - this was a special 315+hp model). Put a hard 90K miles on that puppy; '70 RoadRunner 440+6 4 sp and a 'Cuda 440+6 w/ B&M TF... (way too many over the years to list here). I ran all my cars hard and put many miles on them. I also took great care in maintaining them properly. Besides the standard maintenance (oil, filters, tires, brakes, etc. ) only two clutches, three starters, and one timing chain were changed in over 300,000 combined mileage. Once the government began passing laws to make our cars "safer" and smog choked the dickens out of them the quality fell way off; I guess to keep the cars affordable they had to give in one area and take from the other. Then the gas shortage of 73 hit. The products that were affordable to drive then became the Vegas (oops - shouldn't we line the aluminum cylinders), Pintos (woo-hoo, my butt's on fire) and a variety of European (how do we squeeze 6 people in here?) and Japanese (What!!! $400. 00 starter!!! KMA) cars. The fickle American consumer had Detroit running in circles. You can't stop production of the big behemoth overnight and produce the tiny sippers the following day. Detroit got caught unprepared - didn't have the quality selection (econo-boxes) that were needed. The Japanese took advantage of the situation, saw they had to improve their quality and did so. But still, the media made comparison to the Japanese apples and the American oranges and brainwashed the masses. Today's mess is way too complex with all of the bad government and business practices that have caused the demise of the great American car industry. But we still have outstanding quality in most of our products. Woe be the Hummer:mad: now that they have new owners.

That's because the d50's were Japanese if my memory serves me correctly. Mitsubishi if I recall.

I recently saw in the news that the top 3 most reliable car brands were Scion, Toyota, and Honda.

I flat out REFUSE to buy a car from ANY car manufacturer who took bail out money. Our last car, a Ford Taurus was a TOTAL peice of junk. It steadily fell apart the entire time we owned it. NO WAY I will buy another Ford. Their quality may be a lot better now but they are STILL junk compared to good quality cars like Honda and Toyota.

We needed another car for my oldest daughter who will be attending college in the near future. I wanted something cheap and reliable. We looked at used cars, and the cheap models either had a zillion miles on them and were junk or the good condition used cars were 75% to 85% of the price of a new car and still had high mileage on them.

We finally went through USAA car buyers service and bought a 2009 Honda Element SC. So far, it has been a GREAT car. No problems with the exception of my daughter backing it into a drainage ditch. :mad::rolleyes::{

Very practical, great gas mileage, and LOTS of room. Handles pretty good as well.

About the only thing Dodge has the interests me is their Ram pickup and that is ONLY because it has the Cummins engine. The new $50,000 plus trucks are a PURE NON STARTER for me. They are just NOT worth the prices being asked.

Chrysler has dug its OWN hole and they will have to build a QUALITY, RELIABLE, LONG LASTING vehicle on par with Honda and Toyota before I will ever consder them again... ... . provided they pay back the bail out money.

After spending a LOT of money to modify out the design flaws and crappy workmanship of my 2002 Dodge Ram, I plan to keep it for a LONG LONG time. Over all it has been a good truck but could have been built a LOT better.

The American car manufactures are symbolic of American culture, mind set, and halfassed values & standards... ... ... they are circling down the toilet along with the rest of the country.

CHIEF USA, I couldn't agree more. When the American Big 3 build a car to the quality standards of a Toyota or Honda, then I might consider one.

My first diesel was an '84 Olds 88. I knew they had problems, but I figured if I
bought it for one third of the original price (it was only a year and half old) I could
live with it. Every week would bring another problem, and I had car poolers to get
to work. The dealer service dept. was worse than the vehicle. I then decided that
the big three had treated me like a sucker for long enough. I went out and bought
a new Toyota Land Cruiser. Best vehicle I have ever owned. We have owned
Toyotas since that time. I would have a Toyota 3/4 diesel today if they sold one.
There is one reason I purchased a Dodge truck - it came with a Cummins. After
twenty one years of ownership, I reluctantly sold the Cruiser (wife didn't want it
in the driveway). I hope to keep the Dodge that long.

I can not fiqure out why the news media has decided that all US cars are junk and only cars made outside the US are reliable and gives you decent MPG. The anti US bias in the Consumer's Report Mag is so strong that I canciled my subscripton.

I have owned vehicals made by the big 3 as well as Audi, Subaru, VW, and a few other inports. All of vehicals had good points and some weakness. The recent dip in Dodge/Chysler was due to a lack of vehicals for the cash for junkers program that we just went through.

Only the idiots in D. C. could be dumb enough to give the foreign car manufactures $4,500. of our tax dollars to sell us a car.

Yes DODGE did get help! The goverment got only 10% of dodge. Dodge got cought with there pants down. They did not have very meny small cars on hand when the goverment was buying the big gas buriners. That is why they look bad now. Lets give them 3 month and see what happens.
