Can this be confirmed?

Anyone else see the History channels deal on the Abrams tanks.

Chrysler designed and built these things. Apparently the 1500Hp turbine engine among other things helped put them over the top.

Kinda makes me proud driving my CTD, now all I need is a big gun mounted on the back!

Back in the 70's when this deal went down I think Chrysler was just an American company with a not so good reputation. The program did not really go into who is building them now. I am curious though, can't imagine letting a foriegn company have a contract to build military equipment. I am sure someone can expand on the history of these things.

hey bill, you being a moderator and all, wouldn't your post be considered baiting, since the post had nothing to do with the german/french boycott. I believe this rule applies here:

2. 2. Post any material or comment that is considered to be "baiting" others into an unproductive conflict online. According to Webster's, baiting is: 1. ) to place a lure or trap; 2. ) to entice, especially by trickery or strategy; 3. ) to attack or torment, especially with persistent insults, criticism, or ridicule. Baiting is considered to be any post that intentionally badgers, heckles, or leads another user(s) into an antagonistic discussion.

Morph.

Chrysler has been building tanks since WWII. Lots of companies made all sorts of things during the wars, Singer (the sewing machine company), National Postal Meter, International Harvester, etc, made a lot of firearms.

Chrysler had a finger in lots of defense pies. In the 80's I worked on a couple of projects with the folks at Chrysler in Huntsville Alabama

Hey !!!

You guys left out the Missile Division. Sure, Chrysler built the tanks that beat Rommel, but that big plant on sixteen mile road and Van Dyke built the Redstone and Jupiter missiles that had a big part in bringing down communism in The Eastern European countries. I was employed there in the ground support electronics division for five years. Oh by the way, one of our birds put Alan Shepard into orbit. Every launch was broadcast over the plant PA system. Yes, been to "Huntspatch". Fun place. I spent three weeks helping to integrate the first deployed Redstone fault isolation trailer. My poor roomate found a source for moon shine. Couldn't get out of his bed for two days.

Gotta love a town that has an arsenal AND a Space Camp. Werner von Braun and the rest of the German scientists we snagged ended up being mighty respectable local citizens there.

I was in Huntsville working with Chrysler not long after Challenger was lost. It was pretty somber at Space Camp and in the missile community in general, but later they brought out that IMAX movie "The Dream is Alive" and we all went over and watched it at Space Camp on a later trip. Made ya want to run out, reassemble that old Saturn V, and head on up. Boy that Judith Resnick was looking pretty good in that movie floating around in zero G, what a shame to lose all those talented people. Would have been pretty interesting being in space with a woman that attractive, certain experiments come to mind immediately... :D :D :D

Yo, Mike !

Another space junkie ! We stayed at motels on my tour in the Patch. Stores, theaters, liquor outlets and drinking fountains were still segregated.

Guess I opened a can of worms with this missile thing. My next job at Chrysler was making some critical solder joints waaaaaaay up inside the Lox pipe elbow for the Saturn. Twelve hours, seven days a week for three weeks. Then on to California where I joined a company where the propellant utilization computer was developed. Our system saved the Atlas program by more than doubling the range of the bird. Had some fun days in San Diego county with that.

All this, and I still have not witnessed a Shuttle launch. Hope the program rights itself soon !
