2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission CI-4 Plus Oil

After reading the new TDR 57 issue about the oil analysis I'm confused about the oils. I have been using the Valvoline Premium Blue oil and it meets API services CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4 CF/SL. On the bottom of the round symbol it says CI-4 Plus. So I'm assuming this is a CI-4 plus oil that meets CJ-4 standards. I don't understand the CI-4 plus standard. Can someone explain. Oo.

CJ-4 oil is the latest rating formulated for the 07 paticulate filter equipped trucks. It is claimed by the oil companies to be a superior oil, however some are questioning if it is. They note the reduction of antiwear additives and lower TBN and wonder how it's claimed to be a better oil. On my 01 I'll keep using the "old" stuff until it's no longer available(2009) at the oil distrubutors.

As for the bottle marking you noted I would think it's just a mistake. The CI-4 + rating is the previous rating to the CJ-4 hence I call it the "old" stuff.

My bottles were very similar. What was interesting is that the lingo states that it "meets or exceeds" the CJ4 and other spces.

I believe that TDR issue 56 mentioned this “discrete” change (their term) to the API donut on Premium Blue labels. The TDR articles make it pretty clear that the CI-4 + spec. oils are superior to the newer CJ-4, at least in terms of detergents & anti-wear additives. But as I ran around town, trying to find what may have been left of the CI-4 + spec, I couldn’t help but wonder, would we ever see a meaningful difference in service using the newer oil, and could we compensate for its shortcomings by more frequent oil changes? Has anyone had a chance to get Cummins’ input on this subject?
