1989-1990 Cummins LTA10 engine oil spec

Anti Gel

I thought it was a gone product but here is a list of oils that I found that still meet CI4 and CI4+ but NOT CJ4.

CAT DEO 15W-40
Mobal Delvax MX (MX is the key)
Motorcraft Super Duty 15W-40
Lucas Magnum High TBN
Amsoil (several versions)
Valvoline Premimum Blue Classic 15W-40 (no longer manufactured in US, existing stock only)
Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40
Many are available at autozone, walmart, Oreilly, and Napa. Also truck stops, CAT dealers, Agricultural suppliers, and Marine dealers.
(but not all of them have all of them :)) You have to shop!

The Mobal Delvax MX when ordering was as cheap as $3.25 a quart in 5 gallon containers. ( I also have a tractor)

I'm sure this list is not exaustive, so feel free to fill in others.

Can you actually buy the Premium Blue Classic anymore? It is not available locally, perhaps on the internet somewhere.

Schaeffers makes a CI4+, 151 Moly Bond X-200.

The company I work for buys Delo 400 by the drum, it is still a CI4+ oil.

Personally I don't worry about running a CJ4 oil. CJ4 makes up all but a very small portion of the oil market which means that pre emission engines are running hundreds of millions of miles per year with zero problems. I run a full synthetic CJ4 with 20k mile oci and by the annual oil analysis I could run it much further if I wanted to.

I don't know if you can , but it is still an active product on their website. I will have to call.

As for DELO I cant find any indication on their site that they have a CI-4 product. It only refers to all years. Again I would have to call. Do you have the specific name of the proct thay all seem to have 400 in the name.

I too have been running the CI-J products - no choice, but now that I have the option I will go back to the original for better protection.

It is the Delo 400 multi grade. The 400LE is CJ4.

Have you had an analysis done while running your CJ4 oil? Despite all the gloom and doom many have preached CJ4 has proven to be a more capable oil in many aspects. As with everything, time and technology have improved oil performance.

Look carefully to see if it also meets CJ specs. I have been fooled before with some brands that meet both. If it does, the formula have reduced zinc, etc. required to meet CJ. This is according to Joe Donnelly who enlighten me on my purchased of a so called CI+, which I returned.

I hope Joe reades this and comments on the difference of CI+ and CI/CJ.

Without trying to sound argumentative I have read all the tests that have been performed here at TDR. There have been other additives released on the market to address the reduced amounts of ZDDP. Truckers worldwide are running CJ4 oil In their pre emission engines and have collectively driven hundreds of millions of miles with absolutely zero oil related problems. Everybody is certainly entitled to their own opinions but it's hard to argue with hard evidence like that.

Thanks JR, I added it to the list.

I don't bother with testing anymore to extend my change interval since it is $20 to $25 a pop the price of a gallon or more of oil. With CI-4 my change interval is 1 year or 15K miles as per factory specs so I just do it. Since my truck is now 8 years old with 73K miles I will probably start ocasional checks just to keep an eye on wear. Thanks again for your help and input.

I called Valvoline and they no longer manufacture this in the US. It is still on the website due to existing stock still out there. They do make CI-4 oil for other countries ie europe.

Comparing my oil analysis from the prior CI to the present CJ readings yields a nearly identical graph aside from off the chart Boron levels. I use Chevron Delo LE now.
I change the oil and filter at 6K.

How long do you go between oil change intervals? Do you use you truck for HD service much (IE towing)?

I put this in another post and have received no responses whatsoever. Is anybody running the Lucas 15W-40 Magnum (10076). It is still CI-4. I tried finding a hidden source for Valvoline Premium Blue Classis but it appears the sources have dried up. So, is anyone running the Lucas 15W-40 Magnum???

not me, i've never really been a fan of Lucas products. not saying they are junk, just never really like them.
If i need a CI oil i use Swepco, or amsoil.

Here is a little information I gathered yesterday, on CI4 15/40 motor oil at O" reilly's. They have this in gallons,5 gallons, drums BUT the big draw back is its in there warehouses and not in the stores. Its call "PURE GUARD". I don't know who is the manufacture of it and there sales person,(manager) did know any specifications for the the formulation to see if it measured up to the older specs. 5 Gal container is $59.99. Here In Salt Lake City its in the local warehouse. Gal,and drums in Denver, over nite shipped.

Add Mystik to the list in 15w-40 and 15w-50.

I'll let others go first on the new oil and wait for fleet managers who watch TBN and other things make the oil companies change the formula like they did for the early CJ4 oils due to Doom and Gloom coming TRUE. The last reviews of oil casually mention fleet managers demanding this but don't say why the oil was reformulated: It was reformulated for long drain intervals because things like TBN were not acceptable and required oil changed sooner as it could not make the long drain intervals the older spec would make.

Lucas products work as advertised. After standing in the shop that rebuilt my engine and looking at a bunch of trashed flat tappet Cummins camshafts you bet I use the Lucas "Engine Break-In Oil Additive - TB Zinc Plus" for a new camshaft! Here is how much it changes the Zinc numbers on Valvoline conventional blue 15w-40:

The 3479 is two bottles (Shouldn't be on the road the oil lab said...) and the latest sample is just one bottle.

Edit: Filters are more important both the air filter and oil filter as there are some really bad examples of both on the market.

I'll update this ancient thread. Years ago I bought a pallet of Delo 400 CI-4+. I am down to my last 5 gallons. I looked around and could not find any CI-4+ still being made, except found the Mobile Delvac MX F2 CI-4+. I'm going to try and source it locally through the Mobile distributor. I really want to stay with the CI-4+ and not have to change to the new CK spec oils.

Before selling my 05 I switched it over to CK oil. I could still get Amsoil AME, but CK is a better spec than CI. CJ is gone, thank goodness!!

There shouldn't be any hesitation running a CK oil.
