Just went out to buy oil for my 2008 6.7. I've been using the Rotella 15W40 after first using Valvoline Premium Blue. Ford recently issued a TSB warning diesel owners not to use the new CK-4 oil formulation and to keep using CJ-4. All of my normal places to buy all have CK-4 only. Is there any update of recommendation for Cummins owners? I tried searching first.

My understanding is it is not all CK4 oil but oil that is both CK4 and SN approved that Ford is having problems with. The SN designation means phosphorus levels are nearly cut in half compared to what is acceptable in the CK4 only formulation. I spoke with a Schaeffers rep the other day on this and he was not familiar with the reasons for Ford calling out the CK4 spec but did say that none of their CK4 oils will carry the latest API "S" ratings.
The Ford 6.7 is a funky design with 2 pushrods and rocker arms actuated by a single tappet. Not the most durable set up as there are alot of reported failures on the top ends of these engines when worked hard anyway. The service outfit that maintains/repairs our cranes ditched all their PSD service trucks and stepped up to a class 8 truck. Not because they needed the capacity but because they needed the reliability. Time will tell but I'm guessing the Ford design is pushing the envelope to the extreme and they know the new formulation that carries both API ratings has the potential to accelerate wear in their top ends.

BTW, CES (Cummins engineering standard) 20086 is Cummins new test criteria for CK4 . CES20081 is the standard for CJ4 spec. This is Cummins official stamp of approval so look for that spec on whatever you buy and you'll be just fine.

But their bodies are built with Military grade aluminum (when was the last time you saw an aluminum tank). This is the first I have heard of the valve action and failures, interesting.

M551 had Al hull and rolled homogenous steel turret so it could be air dropped. M114 scout vehicle and M113 APC are Al hull.

Just came across this from Ford.

The customer should not use oils labeled CK-4/SN unless they have been approved by Ford Motor Company to meet WSS-M2C171-F1. This is possible with SAE 10W-40, 15W-40, 5W-40 and 0W-40 oils. At this time SAE 10W-30 oils showing CK-4/SN cannot meet WSS-M2C171-F1 and should be avoided. So if unsure avoid CK-4 oils that also shows SN in the API donut.

So either my observations above about their design being on the ragged edge may have some type of merit or Ford is trying to pull off one heck of a PR stunt. They're saying CK4 is acceptable given you stay with a a XXw/40 and to avoid any 10w30. Pretty sure any manufacturer would agree with the recommendation of "sticking with your OEM specified viscosity" his specifically pertains to Ford because they are factory fill with 10w30.
Given that none of the big players (Cat, Deere, Detroit, Cummins, etc) have cried foul over the latest spec I wouldn't be concerned given you stick with the correct viscosity. Especially if it carries the CES20086.

Dave,
The military does, however, use aluminum for aircraft. Maybe a time and place for everything.

Yeah, spent 4 years working on B-52's and KC-135's along with whatever else that was broke. I just cringe when Ford makes that statement like it is a Godsend.

just get the valvoline, it may be CK, but it's endorsed by Cummins, right on the bottle.
most of the valvoline at walmart is still CJ. the maxlife would be a top choice of mine.

By me, I just found Valvoline CJ4 @ 11.97 a jug at Wally World. There was only 3 left.*
i did see all the CK oils with and without the SN rating.

Related, they're blowing out their Bosch oil filters, I stocked up on a number I use on my other vehicles.*
