If, I'm asking too many questions, let me know. I just got this 99 (my first) and I have to get these bugs out before I really trust what I have. But I love this truck all to heck so far.

Anyway, my check engine light is on, the 3-key-on-off-on wont display codes for me. And disconnecting the batteries all night didn't help either. It comes on with the key-on (before starting) and stays on after starting and running. Guess I'll have the Dodge dealer throw the scan tool on there to see... .

I also noticed the tachometer usually drops to 0 when idleing. As if the truck has died. And even when taking off and having the RPS up, it wont come back on until about 2000 RPM. Then its seems fine... then it quits again. (Maybe the algae in the diesel has worked its way up into my dash... . hehe)

I just wonder if the check engine light and this tach stuff is inter-related. I'll have to see what DC dealer says. They sell about 10 diesels a year and always seem to have one in the shop so they must know something about them... but my feeling is they dont.

PS: Its a 99 built in 11/98

I'm gonna guess that your crank position sensor is on the outs and is what is setting the code. You can get one from a Cummins shop for around $35. If you do a search, you can find out the part number for that sensor. Let us know what you find.

BTW, the key-on, key-off trick doesn't work for our '99s. Just FYI.

Local Dodge dealer hooked up Scan Tool on my lunch break. Codes were as follows (I didnt write down the number... )

1. Crankshaft Position Sensor

2. Transfer Pump Not within Range

They said they would rather not fix it and refered me to Schied Diesel as the place to go for warranty work. Tech told me they were Chrysler certified to work on Cummins Dodges. Plus they are Cummins and Bosch certified so it looks like that is who I'm gonna call. I'd just do it myself, but why pay for the pump if the diesel experts will do it for free.

Thanks for the tip Amianthus.

Scheid's eh? Me thinks you should bring your wallet. Your truck will never be the same. :D

BTW, welcome to the broken lift pump club.

Hmmm... that could be good or bad... which is it. Ya talkin about spending lots a dough on performance items... or just expensive on parts and service. They have always been good to me on the Caterpillar and Cummins in the Volunteer Fire Trucks I work on for my department. Parts always seemed fair and they all but turned the wrenches for me.

You have to be talking about making serious horsepower.

He is talking about Bombing your truck... . they are one of the best... . watch out its very addictive. I am in a 12 step program to try and stop my addiciton to bombing and its not helping. .

:D :D
