I have the factory class 3 hitch on my truck. I would like to install a beefier class 5 hitch specified for Dodge by an "aftermarket" trailer hitch manufacturer.

I talked to the technician at Putnam, where I order my trailering stuff, and he said it should fit, but off the top of his head he said I might need to move the spare tire slightly forward. I looked underneath and there is only about an inch it can move forward.

Has anyone installed a class 5 on a 2nd gen long bed truck, and was it an issue?

I installed a Putnam XDR on my 2001 3500 3 years ago. It fits with no problems at all. I put one on my truck and one on my brothers 1st gen dually. The 1st gen interferes with the spare but not the 2nd gen trucks. I like this a lot better than the factory receiver. You almost can not see it from the back. all that shows is the actual receiver tube and the safety chain tabs. the cross tube tucks up behind the bumper and the receiver is under it instead of all in line like factory. The only problem is that you lose the mount for the plug. I bought a cheap generic bracket and mounted it to the bottom edge of the bumper. One of these days I will make an angled mount to attach to the hitch.
