Pal of mine is in town and doing some maint on his tractor/trailer. We are replacing the S cams, bushings, brake shoes, drums we found a S Cam bushing that has gone to long  and waller-ed out the mount at the slack adjuster end of the S cam that the bushing slides into.
new bushing goes in and will not slide around or out!! just wondering if DOT would say much if anything? to replace the bushing/S cam mount would require a new mount be welded on axle. The arrow is the offending S cam/bushing mount that is question.

Thanks for any help

Big,

Snap me a few pictures of the axle, the s-cam mount and the hub itself so I can try to identify. . Is the diameter of the s-cam 1 1/2" or 1 5/8" where it goes thru the brake spider (the end where the shoes are)???

Are the brakes 16 1/2" x 7"??

Mike we are in the house right now eating breakfast but the S cams are 1 1/2 inch 28 spline. I have never seen a bushing cam support that cant be replaced without being welded on, my memory is failing but I remember them as a two piece affair with like 4 bolts holing it all to the mount with the bushing in the middle of the two pieces. Looked at my International and its like the one that I described, his are WELDED!!! thats BS Its not that badly wallered out and they would be hard pressed to actually see it cause one side of the bushing is the slack adjuster and the other is the upper side of the S cam going to the wheel end of the mount

It will be an issue if they grab it and move the camshaft with the trailer brakes released. Other than that a fella' can get by. They make replacement brackets for some models of trailer axles...

Your pick is what I have on the International but not like his, its on a Double drop 2axle flat, Trail King brand.

Could it be a Hendrckson Intraxx??? Is it air ride??? If so, there require a different cam bushing set. I believe the correct inner bushing diameter is 2", most parts places will try and give you the old 1 7/8" diameter bushing.

Maybe.....

We put the bushing in and hooked up the S Cam and it WONT MOVE!!! unless KING KONG get's after it, and looking at it from the slack adjuster side you would REALLY!!! have to look to see that the mount is wallered the other end is on the top side of the other S cam mount before it goes in to the brake shoes and rollers, HOPE THAT MADE SENSE

I think that being that its a double drop and the axle in question is the front axle of the trailer tandems that the DOT would have to have a BIG BUG UP THEIR A** TO SEE THAT. The trailer drop would be a PITA to get up under to take a look

So when you install the new inner bushing into the wallowed out mount and install the s cam it binds up??? If so, it sounds like they have given him the wrong inner bushing. Is the new bushing nylon???

No they are Bronze or Brass what ever alloy they are but not nylon. We put it all together and built some air and gave it a test and it works just fine!! no movement in the bushing or mount when brakes are applied or released, its just a cosmetic thing to see just a little of the bushing from around the mount. You drove you know how some DOT guys are they try to make it look like they actually do something for the money they earn. The other bushings were the same this was the last axle side that we were doing the others are perfect.

My Pard just said that he thinks that they wont get up under the trailer like we can I have a pit that we are working in and we have a hard time seeing it, they would crawl under with a creeper????? after all we are talking about an Government Employee :-laf

We are going back out to the shop I will try to get some photos of it dont know if my camera will focus that close it's pretty tight to get into.

Mike thanks for your thoughts and help

Gotcha, I would not worry about it. As long as that cam can't be moved up an down he is good as far as I know.

The cosmetic part of it is not affecting the operation of the brakes.
