I just received my Volant air box & filter. I've heard that some of the flat-panel gauze-and-oil filters come from the factory with too much oil on them. I've heard they should be cleaned and lightly reoiled when they're new so they don't pull that excess filter oil into the turbo.

My question. Should I do this to my Volant? How much oil is too much? How do you know you've got enough oil on there? Can I use K&N cleaner/oil on this (it's easier to find)?

Any help from those experienced with gauze-and-oil cone filters would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Kyle

Be careful......

IMO, the over oiling problem comes from us, not the factory delivery. I've never had a problem with any of these filters being overoiled from the factory, and I've bought eight of them over the past few years for different vehicles.

If this filter... . not sure who makes it for Volant... . isn't oily to the touch,... . residue on your finger, and if you let it sit on a papertowel overnight and see no residue, I'd install it. You can always call them, but you'll not likely get anyone who will say anything but "it's already pre-oiled".

Wilth the Volant design unless you are off-road a lot, it should be a long time before you need to clean and re-oil. And yes, I see no reason you couldn't use the K&N cleaner and oil. When I get ready to clean my AFE I'll be using K&N product.

Leave it alone...

Kyle, just put it in and it will be fine. Don't let the all the K&N filter boo hoo's spook you. The filter is made by AFE and the blue oil makes it real easy to see if there is enough oil on it. Like 24V said, unless you do some real heavy off roading, install it and leave it alone for the next couple of years.

What the others said...

I'm currently running the AFE stock replacement and have run many K&Ns over the years, never had a problem with any of them. Follow the directions exactly and you'll be fine.

For peace of mind, check the intake path a couple of days after cleaning and reoiling till you trust em ;)

I use an Amsoil filter. The Amsoil company sells their oil in a pour on container rather then a spray. I asked them why not a spray like K&N. They use that method because they want to make sure that enough oil is saturated into the filter. They recommended putting it in a plastic zip lock and push it into the filter. So I would think that a bit more oil on the filter to capture the dirt is better then a dry spot. And it is a big ol 5. 9 oil burner right!

It's not the oil being burned in the motor that people are worried about, it's the path that the oil has to take to get there. The oil can effect intercooler performance and gum up the sensors in the manifold. :(
