Well, maybe it's not a CLEAN slate, but it's a new project for me. I bought a short block out of a 1990 dodge. I think I did okay on the price, $300. I've got a pretty long shopping list to fill before this is becomes a complete motor. I'm accepting donations or good deals on parts :)



It has the crank and pistons, the cylinder walls have some surface rust, but there's no scoring.



I'll post more pictures as I make progress with it. Money is going to be the determining factor in how long this takes-I'm not in a big hurry . When it's finished, it will be installed in my 1993 Ford F250.



As I've never rebuilt a cummins or anything bigger than a farmall cub motor, I'll probably be asking a lot of questions. For starters, does anyone have any links to info that will be helpfull?

Factory Service Manual. They're about $100 and they're worth every penny. I'd buy one for whichever pump you are planning on using. For a P7100, I'd get a 1997 manual. But then I'm assuming you can use a p-pump on that block. I dunno, I'm assuming. :p



Good luck and don't get in a hurry. One of my sayings is "Rush up and F... up" :rolleyes:
 
Thanks. . I'll look for the '97 service manual. Yes, that block can be upgraded to '97 specs according to the cummins tech line so you assumed right :)

I got on Cummins Power Store and the service manual I belive I need is TR-3666087,B Series & 12-valve Dodge (Engines built in 1991 and after). Is this right? (1995 dodge)
 
I'd buy both the factory TSM and the Haynes. Sometimes, the Haynes explains things a little better than the factory manual. However, the factory manual is much more comprehensive.



That said, I don't have a Haynes for mine. I do have the factory TSM as a very thick book and on CD-ROM. Using the CD, I can print out the pages that I need for a job, use them, and not worry about getting them torn and grubby.



Sounds like a fun, but long term, project. Even before we were married (30 years now), my wife came up with a better time estimating algorithm. Take whatever time I estimated, double it, and add three hours. She was right more often than I was. Unfortunately, that method also works fairly well for costs.

I think this is the reference manual that I need. I called Geno's Garage and asked how detailed the Cummins related info is. The guy I spoke to said that this is the manual that the Dodge service techs have on hand when working on the motors. However, he wasn't sure that it had details down to every nut and bolt.



Is everything I need in the 1997 manual? Will the 97 manual have info on the 215 pump?

I use the book. My computer is grungy enough already. :p



The p7100 will not be covered in any great detail, just enough to set it per factory spec. All the good stuff you need to know about the p-pump--you get here! :p



Bosch will sell you a p-pump book. But I don't think you'll need one unless you want to re-build the pump yourself, and that I don't recommend.



Another snazzy thing about the FSM is that it covers every variation of truck for a given year. IOW you can help your buddy work on his 10-banger or v-six too.



How to get a FSM. Call your favorite dealer. Tell the parts counter you want FSM. They'll give you a number to call... There's the manual, then supplements, and such. I just get the big book.
