My friend took his truck to the dealer, who reccomended the above services for his '04. I've done neither of these things, and never even heard of cleaning the air induction system.

Keep in mind this is the same dealer that changed his auto transmission at 15k.

Are either of these things legit? How does one clean the injectors or the induction system?

TIA, Dave

There are several companies that make equipment to chemically clean gasoline and diesel injection systems... . the chemical will wash away the deposits...

I do it to my gasoline vehicles every other year... . and you can see the difference in the way they run... .

Since the move to ULSD we've used an additive to the fuel to add to the lubrication of the injectors and high pressure pump system... it also contains a chemical to clean the injectors... . and this has worked for us...

Its my personal thought that most dealers don't train well enough... . too much of this chemical can damage the systems and I believe that if a little does a good job they will think a lot will do a better job and might do damage... So I don't go back to the dealer for any service work...

Someone on here had something similar done a little while ago and ended up with the "loosened" contaminants clogging/wrecking an injector IIRC.

What are you adding to compensate for ulsd?

I've been running the occasional tank of b20 for lubricity, but I was getting some rough idle and stopped using it. Not sure if they were related.

We researched 3 brands of chemicals... . and don't remember the brand we decided on... we chose it for several reasons...

1 - lowered gel point by 20-30*F
2 - lubed the pump and injectors
3 - 6 oz of chemical treated 130 gal of diesel.....

a 5 gal container was almost $200. 00 and we bought 6 oz throw away containers to put in the trucks... . one small package keeps us going for a month or so... . we dump them in the large tanks we have and add fuel... . and pitch the 6 oz container in the garbage... . no measuring or storing a big jug...

Works for us...

Personally, I think the dealer is trying to scam you. Okay, maybe "scam" is too harsh... they're trying to make a buck for services that are totally unnecessary.

I own the Cummins fuel system manual for these engines. Nowhere does it ever mention any kind of chemical cleaning. Nowhere in my Dodge service manuals does it ever mention any kind of chemical cleaning of either the fuel system or the air intake plumbing.

This dealer is playing on consumer ignorance. These services are totally unnecessary at best, and as jelag points out, harmful at worst.

The CP-3 is fuel lubricated. Do you really want to run a harsh chemical cleaner through it, which probably provides little or no lubricity? I wouldn't.

Just what fuel system cleaner are they proposing?
