Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) cleaned k&n air filter and found oil at the turbo

black oil at the turbo

when I took the rubber elbow off the turbo there was black oil where the turbo and elbow go together

what does this mean

ps do I need a new turbo and if so do I go bigger than stock

It is from your K&N filter..... all oiled filters leave that residue. If you are talking about the compressor/air intake side.

Check the air intake tube, if there is no oil in it then it is your turbo seal. Check for play by grabbing the hub and seeing if you can move the wheel side to side, a very slight amount is ok, any more and I would start looking at turbos.

tried to move the turbo finwheel side to side it is tight with no play

there was no oil this time when i unhooked the boot from the turbo

the turbo fan has no play in it is this good

There is nothing wrong with K&N. Every 1 has there opinion. I hav used them 4 many years. no need 2 over oil.

there is a thread here where there was a flow bench and particle test, the K&N did worse than any other filter by far!

If you prefer an oiled foam or oiled gause filter, do yourself a favor and clean the IAT sensor from time to time. The oil can foul the sensor and the truck will dump too much fuel, resulting in poor MPG, excessive smoke, and high levels of soot in your oil. Been there, done that, have the oil analysis sheet to show for it.

At the time, I lived on a dirt road and figured that cleaning the IAT and using the Amsoil filter was the way to go. When I moved to a paved street, I swapped it for a BHAF ... until Amsoil started selling the (Donaldson) air filters with nanofiber technology and NO OIL.
