Has anybody found a solvent or detergent that will remove road film from undercarriage and engine room without damaging the paint? Something that you just spray on and hose off without any scrubbing or brushing or wiping with rags.

Been there, done that. As soon as the water dries, the film is back. I have even tried the 2200 lb pressure washer with the same results. If you don't get in there and physically rub the stuff it won't go away. #ad

If it's a film you're trying to remove, you need to try Lime Away... great stuff for frame and suspension components!

Sorry I didn't give a better description of what I call road film. There is nothing exotic about this stuff, it's just dirt and water that splashes up from the wet roadway or mud puddles. The same stuff that you wipe off the outside when you hand wash your truck.

If it's just the dirt and grime you are talking about, go to the car wash and pressure wash the undercarrage. Just don't get the nozzle close to things like wires, wire connections, hoses, etc. Word of caution, I pressure wash the undercarrage every time I wash the truck and have blasted the paint off things like the front springs, leaf springs, etc. which now have a lovely rust coating.

Try something called Castrol "Super Clean". Comes in a 1 gallon purple container. You can find it at most automotive stores including Pep Boys. Be advised, this stuff is tuff. Wet down the area, spray some of this stuff on, let it sit for a few - but don't let it dry, it leaves marks if you do. Then rinse it off. Sure works good, twice as strong as simple green. I like to spray the undercarriage down with a little WD-40 afterwards to top it off - works good.
