Does anyone know if you can clean a K&N air filter without the recharge kit?? Can you just wash one in soap and water. Any help would be appricated. Again thank you!

You really do need the recharge kit to clean your filter. The cleaning agent cleans away the oil and dirt, then when dry you need to respray it the the oil.

you can do part of your filter recharge without the kit. formula 409 has a grease cutter that works exactly like and just as well as the cleaner in the kit, and is much cheaper. go to a motorcycle shop that sells dirt bikes and buy a spray can of just the k&n oil to spray back on the filter. you'll spend much less money over the long haul and do just as good a job.

Yeah, K&N recommends using either the K&N cleaner OR Formula 409. It will take overnight to dry, though. So plan on not using your truck unless you saved your original filter. You cannot use heat, nor compressed air to speed the process. Just air dry it. Then oil it and spray it pleat by pleat and once done, let wick for 15 minutes. Go back and spray any white or faded spots again. Do not over oil!

K&N doesn't recommend it, but on super dirty filters I've used gasoline (extremely effective) followed by the soap & water rinse for at least 10 years. On certain K&N filters (the ones that have a special closed cell seal on certain motorcycle applications I know of) the gasoline will DEFINATELY #ad
destroy the adhesive holding the seal on. #ad
A "Ordinary" K&N w/ only the rubber seal boot is NOT affected. Haven't tried the 409 but I will try that next, to be more environmentally friendly & it would be safer. #ad
