OK, all you Southwest desert rats running an AFE with prefilter. How often do you clean the air filter in relationship to the pre-filter. Here in San Felipe Mx where we live the roads are packed sand, We have been here for 6 weeks this season and I've cleaned the pre-filter one time so far.

any suggestions as to frequency?

File attatchments/AFE filter cleaning

Can someone help me out here? :confused: I understand the maximum file size for attachments is 400 kb. When I try to attach a photo of my air filter I get this response. What am I doing wrong, or is something wrong with the site???

Bill

Baja Bill, I don't live in a sandy place like you so my input may not be relevent, but I'll give it to you anyway. I clean my prefilter sock at the same time I clean the filter, every 5000 miles. I use a Scotty RA III so the filter is covered. It still gets a fair amount of debris on the sock and plenty of yuck to clean out of the cotton.

I just bought a UNI filter and put it on tonight (it fits in the same enclosure). It is a two layer oiled foam filter like dirt bikes use. It is supposed to be more effiecent than factory and still let lots more air through. I cant see light through it like I could on my AFE (non pg7). It's supposed to be good for bad dusty/gritty environments.

I can give you a suggestion on a cleaning solution for the AFE ... ... ... ... use K&N cleaner!

Why do you use K&N cleaner instead of the AFE cleaner. I use K&N filters in my Polaris ATV. But I bought the AFE cleaner kit with my AFE system. I just wanted to know why you prefered the K&N cleaner.

bajabilly, I clean my pre filter sock about every 10,000 miles , the same time I change out my oil filter and top off oil. ( I run "that" stuff) :-laf . Then at 20 ,000 or so I clean the filter itself ( and sock) and dump all the oil and filter! Lately that's been every other month , I run back and forth to OKC a lot!! :rolleyes: ( Know anyone needing a quality car trailer?)

Cleaning AFE

Thanks for the posts. It has only been 3 weeks between cleaning the pre-filter and today I cleaned the pre-filter and filter. In really dusty conditions it looks like I'll have to clean the filter every month or so depending on how much the wife drives the truck of course.

I've noticed the fan pulls the air/dust up into the engine area a lot worse than my 95 CTD did. :{

I just don't want to clean it to frequently knowing a somewhat dirty filter works better than a clean one.

I bought a charger kit with my AFE, but the cleaner didn't seem to want to cut the dirt after a couple hours of soaking. So I got to digging around in the garage and found some K&N cleaner left over from my sprint car days and it melted the dirt like hot butter!

I seem to recall reading that it was important to use the AFE Filter Oil. If memory serves me right, the AFE Oil will not get sucked off the filter media and coat a sensor in the air intake system. Not sure how true this is but, I thought i'd mention it. If anyone has more accurate information, please fill us in. Thanks. Joe F. (Buffalo).

I read the same thing somewhere, the aFe oil is supposed to be different. It is easy enough to get from Geno's, I ordered it when I got the filter.
