I have the open style AFE "mega Cannon" setup and was wondering if it should be cleaned. It looks filthy (grey/brown dirty color). It has been on the truck for about 12000 miles, some of them on very dusty roads. I know they are supposed to last much longer, but what is the easiest way to tell??

What is your filter minder reading?

If you have any concerns, etc, I'd contact Nick (president) at AFE. He usually fields some of the tech support questions. I have talked to him a few times when calling for tech support. He's a good guy, answered all my questions regarding the Mega-Cannon and sent me a cleaning kit and T-shirt as a thank you for purchasing the Mega-Cannon!!

Do you have the outerwear for it? If not I'd recomend it for the dirt road situations. I clean my outerwear every 5,000mi, and my actual filter every 10,000. A lot of it just depends on how dirty of an environment you put it through. I farm and also do earthwork so mine sees a lot more abuse than many others. But it's also a lot easier to clean when there's just a lil loose dirt than a lot of packed dirt.

Just my opinion.

The install guide that came with mine said to clean when the air indicator gauge shows between 35% to 65% restriction. I'm guessing thats if you have the precleaner on it too.

don't 'umember the PN for the Mega, but they should know what you're talking about.

I like this pre- filter. Got ~10K on mine... no off-road, and the AFE looks brand new. Some say it has causes some air flow restriction, but I've not been able to notice any difference.

Sorry, after racing quads I just got used to calling them "outerwears" cause they were about the only company that made prefilters for them. It's actually just a prefilter that I'm refering to, kind of a nylon sock that goes over your filter element and AFE actually makes there own. I think they are like $30 and you should be able to get it wherever you got your filter.

It saves A LOT! of extra cleaning on the element. A friend of mine taught me how to clean the pre filter too... he just through his in with his jeans in the laundry. Said it came out looking better than new. :D
